StormBreaker Support Contract Ceiling Raised to $950 Million

The US Air Force has raised the ceiling on Raytheon’s contract for maintenance and support of the GBU-53/B StormBreaker guided munition by $350 million. The total upper limit rises from $600 million to $950 million.

What a Ceiling Increase Means

According to reports, the contract is managed by the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center at Eglin Air Force Base, with work carried out at Raytheon’s plant in Tucson, Arizona. The period of work has been extended through December 31, 2030.

A ceiling increase raises the cap on how many orders the Air Force can place under the contract; money is committed as individual orders are issued. The $350 million increase does not mean the sum is being spent immediately.

From $200 Million in 2019 to $950 Million

The contract (FA8672-19-D-0001) began in 2019 as a $200 million Small Diameter Bomb II Life Cycle Support Contract III. Its ceiling rose to $275 million in 2022 and to $600 million in 2024 after a $325 million increase. Today’s $350 million increase takes it to $950 million.

What Is StormBreaker?

The GBU-53/B StormBreaker (SDB II) is a winged guided bomb small enough to fit in the F-35’s internal weapons bay. Its tri-mode seeker lets it hit moving targets in poor weather. For its salvo firing from the F-35B, see our report on eight StormBreakers fired simultaneously from an F-35B.
