Turkish Defense Tech Secures Multi-Billion Dollar Agricultural Sector
Turkey’s robust defense industry is increasingly transferring its advanced data security, electronic tracking, and artificial intelligence capabilities into critical civilian sectors. The latest strategic integration was unveiled with the launch of the Secure Electronic Ear Tag Monitoring System (GEKİS), a nationwide project designed to digitize the tracking of the country’s livestock population.
Announced by the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, İbrahim Yumaklı, the GEKİS initiative highlights a growing trend: the application of defense-grade “dual-use technologies” to ensure national food security and economic efficiency.
Defense Infrastructure Meets Food Security
The integration of defense capabilities into the agricultural sector was underscored by the direct involvement and support of the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB). Minister Yumaklı explicitly acknowledged the vital contributions of SSB President Haluk Görgün and the nation’s young engineering talent in developing this secure digital ecosystem.
Turkey, which ranks 14th globally in arable land and currently stands as Europe’s leading agricultural producer by revenue, views livestock as a strategic sector. The GEKİS project aims to secure an asset pool of over 17 million cattle, which holds an estimated economic value of 1.5 trillion Turkish Liras (approximately $43 billion).
Beyond a Simple Ear Tag: Big Data and AI Integration
Transitioning from traditional plastic tags to an advanced electronic infrastructure, GEKİS will assign a secure “digital identity” to every animal.
“Through GEKİS, the entire lifecycle of an animal—from birth, vaccinations, and health records to its movements, sales, and slaughter processes—will be securely tracked in an electronic environment,” Minister Yumaklı stated. “This is beyond a simple ear tag; it is the definition of secure registration, powerful tracking, and healthy production.”

The system heavily relies on large-scale data processing and AI. By creating a secure and centralized database, the government can rapidly detect and intervene in animal diseases, effectively manage epidemic risks, and eliminate the systemic issues of counterfeit or lost tracking tags.
Minister Yumaklı emphasized the role of Artificial Intelligence in this new era: “In the age of AI, the technology is only as effective as the data it is fed. Without healthy data and secure records, even the best technologies fail to deliver results. The processing of data obtained through this system will enable us to implement healthier, faster, and more actionable decisions.”
Maximizing Economic Yield Through Digital Tracking
The economic implications of applying precise digital tracking to agriculture are immense. Turkey currently produces over 1.3 million tons of beef and 20 million tons of cow’s milk annually. Historically monitored through physical methods, this massive production chain will now benefit from data-driven breeding programs and reduced calf mortality rates.
According to the Ministry, even a minimal 1% increase in efficiency—driven by accurate data management and rapid health interventions—translates to an additional 12 billion liras retained within the national economy annually.
The launch of GEKİS in the eastern province of Kars marks a significant milestone in Turkey’s strategic vision, proving that the engineering prowess developed for national defense can be seamlessly pivoted to safeguard civilian industries and optimize national resources.
