Arquus, the French Maker of the Griffon Armored Vehicle

Arquus is the French land-vehicle maker created in 2018 by merging Renault Trucks Defense and Panhard, and its Griffon armored carrier is the backbone of a French Army order of well over 1,000 vehicles. Long a unit of Sweden’s Volvo Group, the company has since moved into the orbit of Belgium’s John Cockerill, which gives it a new owner and a new strategy.
What is Arquus
Arquus was formed when Volvo Group combined two French names with deep roots in military vehicles. Renault Trucks Defense, formerly Renault Véhicules Industriels’ defense unit, produced the VAB armored personnel carrier, the Sherpa light tactical vehicle family and heavy logistic trucks. Panhard, one of the oldest automotive names in the world, built reconnaissance vehicles such as the AML and ERC and the VBL light armored vehicle that equipped France and many export customers.
The merged brand is headquartered in France, with production tied to historical plants near Limoges and Lyon. Its character is practical rather than flashy: proven wheeled vehicles, big fleets and long support contracts.

Who owns Arquus
Volvo Group owned Renault Trucks Defense and then Arquus for many years, but defense was a small and somewhat awkward fit beside its commercial truck and construction machinery businesses. The sale of Arquus to Belgium’s John Cockerill reshaped the French vehicle industry, where KNDS is the other major land systems group. The buyer already made gun turrets, so the combination pairs Cockerill weapon stations with Arquus hulls, a logical fit for a market that increasingly wants integrated systems.
What does Arquus make
| Vehicle | Type | Note |
|---|---|---|
| VBMR Griffon | 6×6 armored personnel carrier | French Army Scorpion vehicle, several mission variants |
| VAB | 4×4 and 6×6 armored carrier | Produced in large numbers since the 1970s; successor being Griffon |
| Panhard VBL | 4×4 light armored vehicle | Widely exported reconnaissance vehicle |
| Sherpa Light | 4×4 light tactical vehicle | Used by special and light forces |
| Scarabee | Light armored vehicle | Designed for special forces use |
| Military trucks | Heavy logistic vehicles | Renault Trucks-derived family for supply roles |
The Griffon is the current flagship. It is a 6×6 carrier that can be fitted as a command post, ambulance, mortar carrier, engineer vehicle or remote-weapon APC. The vehicle works with Nexter and Thales under the Scorpion program, the broad modernization effort that also includes the Jaguar reconnaissance vehicle and the Serval light carrier.
Arquus Griffon and the Scorpion program
Scorpion is about networking as much as hardware. The vehicles share a combat information system known as SICS, letting commanders see the same battlefield picture across types, and a common family of parts simplifies logistics. The French order for Griffon, the single biggest contract in Arquus history, is reported at close to 2,000 vehicles across mission variants. The work is shared with KNDS France, which leads on the Jaguar, and Thales, which supplies electronics.
Belgium also joined the program through its CaMo partnership with France, ordering Griffon, Jaguar and related vehicles so the two armies can share equipment and training. The arrangement is a template for other European countries wanting joint procurement; see our look at the Boxer for another multinational wheeled program.
Arquus exports and outlook
Arquus has sold VAB and VBL vehicles across Europe, Africa and the Middle East over several decades, and the VBL is still in service with dozens of countries. Newer efforts focus on Griffon exports and Sherpa light vehicles, but the export record of the Scorpion family is still young, and competition from Patria, Iveco and Rheinmetall is intense.
Annual revenue under Volvo was reported at around one billion euros, though precise numbers under the new ownership are not widely disclosed. The outlook depends on three things: delivering French Army Griffons on schedule, turning them into exports, and integrating with John Cockerill without losing the French industrial base that gave Arquus its identity.
