Top 10 Most Powerful Militaries in the World in 2026

Which countries have the strongest armed forces in 2026? The most widely cited answer comes from the Global Firepower (GFP) 2026 index, which scores 145 countries on more than 60 factors, from troop numbers and equipment to logistics, finances and geography. A lower PowerIndex score means a stronger military. Below is the top 10, with each country’s military spending for 2025 from SIPRI where available.
Rankings like this are a starting point, not a verdict. They count hardware and resources, but cannot fully measure training, combat experience, alliances or nuclear weapons, which is why we add context for each entry.
- Source: Global Firepower 2026 (lower PowerIndex = stronger)
- Top 3: United States, Russia, China
- World military spending 2025: $2,887 billion (SIPRI)
- Biggest riser to watch: Germany (+24% spending in 2025)
1. United States (PowerIndex 0.0741)
The US remains in a league of its own, with 11 aircraft carriers, the world’s largest air fleet and a 2025 budget of $954 billion. No other military can project power globally at the same scale.
2. Russia (0.0791)
Despite heavy losses in Ukraine, Russia keeps second place thanks to its huge land forces, vast territory and the world’s largest nuclear arsenal. SIPRI puts its 2025 spending at $190 billion, about 7.5% of GDP.
3. China (0.0919)
China spent an estimated $336 billion in 2025, the 31st year of continuous growth. It has the world’s largest navy by number of ships, two-plus aircraft carriers in service and a fast-growing nuclear force.
4. India (0.1346)
India fields one of the world’s largest armies and spent $92.1 billion in 2025, the fifth-highest total. It operates two aircraft carriers and is steadily replacing imported equipment with domestic designs.
5. South Korea (0.1642)
Facing North Korea across a fortified border, South Korea maintains a large, modern force and a powerful defense industry whose K2 tanks, K9 howitzers and FA-50 jets now sell worldwide.
6. France (0.1798)
France is the EU’s only nuclear power and spent $68.0 billion in 2025. It has a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the Rafale fighter and a long record of expeditionary operations in Africa and the Middle East.
7. Japan (0.1876)
Japan’s spending rose 9.7% in 2025 to $62.2 billion, its highest share of GDP since 1958. It is buying long-range strike missiles and F-35s as it adapts to pressure from China and North Korea.
8. United Kingdom (0.1881)
Britain spent $89.0 billion in 2025 and operates two aircraft carriers, nuclear-armed submarines and the F-35B. Its forces are small in number but highly capable and deeply integrated with the US.
9. Türkiye (0.1975)
NATO’s second-largest army by personnel, Türkiye spent $30.0 billion in 2025. Its defense industry, from Bayraktar drones to the KAAN fighter, has become one of the fastest-growing in the world.
10. Italy (0.2211)
Italy rounds out the top 10 with a capable navy, two light carriers operating F-35Bs and major roles in programs such as the GCAP sixth-generation fighter.
Just outside the top 10
Brazil (11th), Germany (12th), Indonesia (13th), Pakistan (14th) and Israel (15th) follow. Germany is the one to watch: its spending jumped 24% in 2025 to $114 billion, the fourth-highest in the world, and it is likely to climb as that money turns into equipment.
