Boeing Rolls Out Second RAF E-7 Wedgetail as Britain Closes a Five-Year AEW Gap
Boeing rolled out the second of three E-7A Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning Mk 1 aircraft for the United Kingdom on 26 August 2026, the airframe emerging in full Royal Air Force livery and the markings of 8 Squadron. Designated WT002, it will join WT001 at RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland, the type’s home base.
The rollout is a modest event in isolation — one aircraft, in paint, on schedule. Its significance lies in what it restores. Britain has been without a sovereign airborne early warning and control capability since the E-3D Sentry fleet was retired in 2021, a gap that has persisted for five years in a period when European air surveillance requirements have moved sharply in the opposite direction.
A Long Road From Birmingham
The three UK Wedgetails began life as Boeing 737 Next Generation airframes, inducted into STS Aviation Services’ line in Birmingham, England, from November 2020 for conversion. That work involves considerably more than fitting a radar: the fuselage is reinforced to carry the dorsal antenna, the electrical and cooling systems are rebuilt to feed the mission suite, and the cabin becomes an operator compartment.
The programme has not run smoothly. The UK originally ordered five aircraft, cut the buy to three in the 2021 Integrated Review, and watched service entry slip repeatedly — the RAF’s in-service date moved into 2026 after successive delays. WT001 arrived at Lossiemouth for the first time in May 2026. Boeing subsequently secured a sustainment contract worth around £127 million to support the fleet in service.
Three aircraft is a thin fleet for a capability that must be available continuously. With one airframe typically in deep maintenance and another in training or transit, sustained operational coverage from a three-ship force is difficult, and the RAF has been open about the constraint.
What the Wedgetail Does
The E-7’s Northrop Grumman Multi-role Electronically Scanned Array is the reason the type has become NATO’s default answer to the AEW&C question. Unlike the rotating radome of the E-3, MESA is a fixed electronically scanned array that can steer beams electronically, dwelling longer on sectors of interest and switching between air and maritime search without mechanical repositioning.
Operationally, that translates into a longer detection range against small targets and the ability to track a contested air picture while simultaneously monitoring surface traffic. In the North Atlantic and High North — the airspace Lossiemouth exists to cover — that combination matters, because the same mission may need to hold both Russian long-range aviation transiting the Greenland-Iceland-UK gap and maritime activity below it.
The Wider Wedgetail Picture
The E-7 has become the consensus Western replacement for the E-3 airframe, adopted by Australia, which developed and first fielded it, plus Turkiye, South Korea, the United Kingdom and NATO itself, which selected the type for the Alliance Future Surveillance and Control programme to succeed its shared E-3A fleet.
The United States has been the outlier. The U.S. Air Force’s E-7 programme has been repeatedly contested in budget deliberations, with proposals to cancel it in favour of space-based moving target indication capability, and the argument has swung more than once. That debate matters to every other operator: the size of the eventual production run shapes unit cost, spares availability and the pace of software development across the whole user community.
For the UK specifically, NATO’s own E-7 selection creates a useful alignment. A British fleet operating the same aircraft as the alliance’s shared force, and as several bilateral partners, opens the door to pooled training, common support arrangements and interoperable mission software — the kind of arrangement that partly offsets the limitations of owning only three airframes.
Why It Matters Now
European air defence has changed character since 2021. Airspace incursions along NATO’s eastern flank, the routine appearance of long-range drones over member states’ territory, and the volume of Russian aviation activity around the North Atlantic have all raised the demand for persistent airborne surveillance well above what the alliance’s ageing E-3A fleet can supply.
Ground-based radar cannot substitute. Terrain and the curvature of the earth impose a horizon that leaves low-flying aircraft, cruise missiles and drones undetected until they are close, and the maritime approaches to the UK are precisely where that limitation is most acute. An airborne radar at altitude sees over that horizon; this is why AEW&C aircraft have remained a scarce and heavily tasked asset throughout the post-2022 period.
WT002 in 8 Squadron colours does not by itself resolve the shortage. It does mean that two of three UK Wedgetails are now complete, with the third to follow, and that the RAF is closer to declaring a capability it has done without since 2021.
