How Strong Is the Chinese Military in 2026? Size, Budget and Weapons

China’s People’s Liberation Army is the largest military in the world, with about two million active personnel, and the second most powerful after that of the United States. Its official budget for 2026 is 1.91 trillion yuan, about $277 billion, up 7% on the year before, and the Pentagon believes real spending is considerably higher. It has the world’s largest navy by number of ships, its largest land-based missile force and the fastest-growing nuclear arsenal. The 2026 Global Firepower index ranks it third, behind the United States and Russia.
This final guide in our series brings together the numbers on China’s people, money and weapons, and the weaknesses behind them.
How big is the Chinese military?
The PLA has four services, the Ground Force, Navy, Air Force and Rocket Force, and, since a 2024 reorganisation, four separate arms for aerospace, cyberspace, information support and joint logistics, all under the Central Military Commission chaired by Xi Jinping. It also controls the People’s Armed Police and, through it, the China Coast Guard.

How much does China spend on defence?
China announced a defence budget of 1.91 trillion yuan for 2026, a 7% increase after three years of 7.2% rises, making it the second-largest military budget in the world after America’s. It is about five times Japan’s and roughly nine times Taiwan’s. The Pentagon says the official figure leaves out items such as research and development, and estimated that real spending in 2024 was 32 to 63% higher than declared. Defence budgets around the world are compared in our ranking of the largest defence budgets.
Weapons: what this series found
Across this series, the pattern is consistent. China leads the world in land-based missiles and fielded hypersonic weapons, and its nuclear arsenal is growing faster than any other. Its navy is the largest by number of ships, with three aircraft carriers, and its air force flies about 500 J-20 stealth fighters with two sixth-generation designs in testing. It is weaker in nuclear submarines, long-range bombers and tanker aircraft, where the United States still holds a large lead.
Strengths and weaknesses
China’s strengths are scale, industry and geography. Its shipyards and factories can produce weapons faster than any rival, and in a war near Taiwan it would fight close to home while American forces would have to cross the Pacific. Its weaknesses are experience and leadership. The PLA has not fought a war since 1979, and a sweeping anti-corruption purge has removed dozens of senior commanders since 2022, including two members of the Central Military Commission. The Center for Strategic and International Studies counts 101 senior PLA leaders purged since 2022, which raises questions about readiness and command.
How does China compare with the United States?
The United States still has the stronger military overall: a bigger budget, more nuclear warheads, more carriers and nuclear submarines, far more tankers and bombers, global bases, allies and combat experience. But the balance in the western Pacific has shifted sharply towards China over the past two decades. Britain’s much smaller forces are covered in our guide to how strong the UK military is, and the world’s navies in our ranking of the top navies.
