Russia Claims 1,043 Ukrainian Drones Downed Overnight in Second Straight Mass Attack

Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed on 30 October 2026 that its air defences intercepted and destroyed 1,043 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones overnight across 19 Russian regions, including the Moscow region. The figure, posted on the ministry’s official Telegram channel, follows a claim of 1,214 drones downed the previous night, marking a second consecutive night of four-digit totals. The numbers could not be independently verified, and Kyiv had not commented on them at the time of writing.

Key facts
  • Claimed total: 1,043 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones intercepted overnight on 29-30 October
  • Regions: 17 oblasts plus the Moscow region and the Republic of Tatarstan
  • Previous night: Russia claimed 1,214 drones downed over 19 regions
  • Disruption: about 75 flights delayed at Moscow Sheremetyevo; 27 Moscow-bound flights diverted to St Petersburg

Where Russia says the drones were shot down

According to the ministry, the drones were destroyed over the Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, Volgograd, Kursk, Kaluga, Kostroma, Oryol, Penza, Rostov, Ryazan, Smolensk, Samara, Saratov, Tver, Tula and Yaroslavl regions, as well as the Moscow region and Tatarstan. The geographic spread, reaching deep into the Volga region, again points to Ukraine’s growing use of long-range one-way attack drones against targets far from the front line.

Regional officials gave partial figures of their own. Izvestia reported that the Kaluga governor cited 94 drones destroyed with no casualties or damage, while about 50 were reported over the Rostov region and 21 over Tula.

Refinery and military supplier reportedly targeted

Samara Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev confirmed a drone attack on his region on the morning of 30 October, saying air defence systems and mobile fire groups were operating. The Moscow Times, cited by Ukraine’s Ukrinform, reported that drones struck the Rosneft-owned Novokuybyshevsk oil refinery, which has an annual processing capacity of 8.3 million tonnes. In Starodub, Bryansk region, a plant that makes canned food and field rations for Russia’s armed forces was reportedly hit, causing a large fire. These reports have not been officially confirmed.

Airport disruption and wider context

Temporary restrictions at Moscow airports forced airlines to divert aircraft. Izvestia reported that around 75 flights were delayed at Sheremetyevo, while St Petersburg’s Pulkovo airport took in 27 flights bound for Moscow.

The claims came hours after Russia’s Defence Ministry said it had carried out a massive overnight strike on Ukrainian defence-industry plants producing long- and medium-range drones, along with energy facilities and Odesa port infrastructure. The back-to-back mass drone raids underline how both sides are now relying on large salvos of uncrewed systems to stretch each other’s air defences.
