SAR9 SOCOM Pistol: Specifications, the SAR9 SP Link and US Police Adoption

SAR9 SOCOM Pistol: Specifications, the SAR9 SP Link and US Police Adoption
Quick answer: The SAR9 SOCOM is a full-size, 9×19 mm, polymer-framed member of Sarsılmaz’s SAR9 family. Sarsılmaz’s data sheet lists a 131 mm barrel, a weight of 750 g without a magazine, a 213 mm overall length and 10-, 15- and 17-round magazines. The company says the SOCOM is the export counterpart of the SAR9 SP, a pistol it developed for Türkiye’s Special Forces Command. In April 2024 Sarsılmaz announced that the Galveston Police Department in Texas had added the SAR9 SOCOM to its duty weapons. SAR USA also sells shorter SOCOM Compact and SOCOM Comp versions.

The SOCOM name gets more attention than its spec sheet, partly because it suggests a link to US Special Operations Command. There is no such link. According to Sarsılmaz, the name refers to the Turkish special forces requirement behind the SAR9 SP. This guide sets out the manufacturer’s figures, the confirmed police adoption, the related models and what is still unverified. For the whole family, start with our SAR9 pistol guide.

Development and background

Sarsılmaz’s account starts in Türkiye. The company says it developed the SAR9 SP for the requirements of the Turkish Special Forces Command (Özel Kuvvetler Komutanlığı) and that the SP entered Turkish Armed Forces inventory. The company also says the SAR9 SOCOM was inspired by the SP and is sold in Türkiye under the SAR9 SP name. Guns & Ammo, reviewing the SOCOM Comp, likewise attributes the name to Turkish special forces, citing SAR USA marketing. The SOCOM should not be confused with Türkiye’s standard-issue service pistol from Sarsılmaz under the ÖYTG programme, which is a different model, the SAR9 METE.

The SOCOM reached the US civilian market through SAR USA, Sarsılmaz’s US distributor. In its SHOT Show 2023 announcement, Sarsılmaz said SAR USA introduced the SAR9 Sub Compact and the SAR9 SOCOM there. The company has since presented the SOCOM as the face of its US law enforcement sales. The US arm now also uses the name Sarsilmaz US: in an October 2026 release for the CANCON West event in Nevada (22–24 October), it said it would highlight a “SAR9 SOCOM Series” in Compact and Full-Size configurations.

Design and features

The figures below are from Sarsılmaz’s SAR9 SOCOM technical data sheet (revision 0, 10 October 2024). The SAR9 SP column uses the SP product page and data sheet (revision 0, 16 October 2023), and the SAR9 Gen3 column uses the Gen3 data sheet, for comparison.

The SOCOM sheet lists S-M-L backstraps and side panels, a Picatinny rail, a magwell, a barrel thread protector, mounting holes for a red-dot sight, high front and rear sights and a slide with cooling channels. Dimensions are given with a 17-round magazine.

The official material contains two inconsistencies. First, the SP product page lists a manual safety, but the SOCOM sheet does not. Despite the company’s description of the two as the same pistol under different names, the published configurations differ. Second, Sarsılmaz’s 2024 Galveston release mentions 17- and 21-round magazine options for the SOCOM, while the data sheet lists 10, 15 and 17. Buyers should check the configuration offered in their market.

Sarsılmaz also displays a separate SAR9 SP Special. It is listed with a 113.5 mm barrel and 730 g, and the company’s IDEF 2025 announcement says it is built on the SAR 2023 platform. It should not be confused with the SP or the SOCOM.

Where the SOCOM sits in the SAR9 range

Sarsılmaz offers three long-slide SAR9 models, and their published figures are close. The SAR9 Sport Gen3 has a 133.5 mm barrel and weighs 730 g, and its product page lists a manual safety. The SAR9 SP has a 129 mm barrel and weighs 750 g. The SOCOM has a 131 mm barrel and also weighs 750 g. The company’s positioning differs more than the numbers. The Sport Gen3 is presented as the sporting member of the Gen3 series, the SP as a Turkish special forces pistol, and the SOCOM as a duty pistol for US law enforcement that is also suitable for competition. Readers choosing between them should compare the safety configuration, optic mounting and magazine options in the official sheet for the exact model, not the family name.

SOCOM Compact and SOCOM Comp

SAR USA offers shorter SOCOM models. Guns & Ammo reports that the SOCOM Compact is SAR USA’s best-selling model and that the SOCOM Comp is built on the Gen3 platform. Sarsılmaz’s SHOT Show release says Guns & Ammo featured the SOCOM Compact on its cover. Neither model has a data sheet on the Sarsılmaz website, so we do not reproduce third-party figures as official data. For the Gen3 changes these models share, see our SAR9 Gen3 guide.

International context

The SOCOM sits in the full-size, long-slide segment of the US duty and competition market. Sarsılmaz’s product page describes it as offering “full-size carry features and design suitable for competition use”. For a size reference against the most common duty pistol, the official GLOCK G17 Gen5 has a 114 mm barrel, so the SOCOM’s barrel is 17 mm longer than a G17’s. Our SAR9 vs Glock comparison covers the standard SAR9 against the G17 and G19.

In the US, adoption by small and mid-sized police departments usually comes through department-level selection rather than national programmes. That is why individual department announcements matter for a foreign brand.

We did not find a statement from the Galveston Police Department itself, so the adoption rests on the manufacturer’s release and Turkish trade-press reports based on it. The number of pistols involved has not been published. Sarsılmaz’s later SHOT Show release says the SOCOM is in active service with police departments in Texas, without naming others. Its SOCOM product page now names Houston as well as Galveston. We found no Sarsılmaz announcement, Houston Police Department statement or independent report describing a Houston selection, its scope or its date, so we treat it as an unconfirmed company claim.

What makes it notable?

The SOCOM is the SAR9 model with which Sarsılmaz moved from US civilian sales to US police duty use, starting with Galveston. It also shows how the company carries a Turkish military requirement into an export product: the SP for the Turkish special forces, then the SOCOM for SAR USA. Two points remain unresolved for readers comparing pistols. The SP and SOCOM configurations differ on paper, and the US police quantity has not been disclosed.
