Top 10 Maritime Patrol Aircraft in the World (2026)

Submarines are among the deadliest weapons in any navy, and the aircraft that hunt them are some of the most important in any air force. Maritime patrol aircraft (MPAs) fly for hours over the sea, dropping sonobuoys, tracking ships and carrying torpedoes and anti-ship missiles. Here are ten of the most capable in 2026.

Key facts
  • MPAs hunt submarines and track surface ships over vast oceans
  • P-8A Poseidon is the global standard
  • Japan’s P-1 is a rare purpose-built design
  • Drones like MQ-4C Triton now share the mission
  • Demand is rising with submarine fleets in Russia and China

1. Boeing P-8A Poseidon (United States)

Built on the Boeing 737, the P-8A is the world’s benchmark MPA. It combines a powerful radar, acoustic processing for sonobuoys, Mk 54 torpedoes and Harpoon missiles. Operators include the US, UK, Australia, India, Norway, New Zealand and South Korea, and Germany and Canada have ordered it.

2. Kawasaki P-1 (Japan)

The P-1 is one of the few modern MPAs designed from scratch for the role. Four turbofan engines, fly-by-light controls and an AESA radar make it fast and quiet over the water. Japan uses it to track Chinese and Russian submarines around its islands.

3. Dassault Atlantique 2 (France)

France’s Atlantique 2 is a twin-turboprop hunter that can fly low and slow for long periods. Modernised to the Standard 6 configuration with new radar and acoustics, it also flies overland surveillance and strike missions with laser-guided bombs.

4. Shaanxi KQ-200 / Y-8Q (China)

The KQ-200, based on the Y-8 transport, is the PLA Navy’s main anti-submarine aircraft. Equipped with a magnetic anomaly detector boom and a large radar, it patrols the East and South China Seas and reflects China’s growing focus on undersea warfare.

5. Ilyushin Il-38N (Russia)

The Il-38N is a modernised version of the Soviet Il-38 with the Novella search system. It remains Russia’s main shore-based anti-submarine aircraft, while India operates its own upgraded Il-38s.

6. Tupolev Tu-142 (Russia)

Derived from the Tu-95 bomber, the four-engine Tu-142 has enormous range and is used for long-distance anti-submarine patrols over the Atlantic and Pacific. It is old, but no other Russian aircraft can match its endurance.

7. Lockheed P-3C Orion (United States)

The legendary P-3 Orion has hunted submarines since the 1960s. Although the US Navy has replaced it, upgraded P-3Cs still serve in countries such as Japan, Taiwan, Brazil and several others.

8. Airbus C295 MPA (Europe)

The C295 MPA offers an affordable twin-turboprop option for coastal surveillance, search and rescue and anti-submarine work. Countries including Spain, Portugal and Chile use it to watch large maritime zones on a limited budget.

9. Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton (United States)

The Triton is a high-altitude, long-endurance drone that can watch huge areas of ocean for more than a day. It works alongside the P-8A with the US Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force.

10. Saab Swordfish (Sweden)

Swordfish is Saab’s business-jet-based MPA, built on the Bombardier Global 6000. With its long range, modern sensors and torpedoes, it is a strong alternative for countries that want a jet MPA without buying American.

Why MPAs matter

With Russia and China expanding their submarine fleets and undersea cables becoming targets, maritime patrol has returned to the top of the agenda. Expect more orders, more drones and more European countries rebuilding a capability many let fade after the Cold War.
