Storm Shadow SCALP Missile Specs, Range and Combat Record

Storm Shadow SCALP is the Anglo-French stealth cruise missile that has put a 450 kg penetrating warhead through hardened targets from Iraq in 2003 to Crimea in 2023, at ranges beyond 250 km. Built by MBDA in matching British and French versions, it became the first Western long-range missile Ukraine fired into occupied territory, and its combat log is now among the deepest of any air-launched cruise weapon.

What is Storm Shadow SCALP

Storm Shadow is the British name and SCALP-EG the French name for the same air-launched cruise missile, developed from the 1990s Apache program by Matra and British Aerospace, companies whose missile arms merged into MBDA. The design goal was simple to state and hard to do, fly low and unseen deep into defended airspace and destroy a hardened, high-value target, a bunker, an airbase, a bridge, without risking a strike package.

How Storm Shadow finds its target

The missile’s guidance is a layered, jam-resistant stack. It navigates by inertial reference aided by GPS and terrain profile matching, then, in the terminal phase, pops up, jettisons its nose cap and compares what its imaging infrared seeker sees against a stored image of the target, scene matching that works even if GPS is denied. The pop-up dive also sets up the BROACH warhead, whose precursor charge opens concrete or earth before the follow-through penetrator detonates inside. It is a philosophy built for fixed, planned targets, and it is why the weapon kept hitting precisely in Ukraine’s dense jamming environment where satellite-guided munitions struggled.

Storm Shadow in Ukraine

The UK’s May 2023 decision to donate Storm Shadow made it the first Western cruise missile in Ukrainian hands, with France following with SCALP. Fired from Soviet-era Su-24 bombers with adapter pylons, the missiles were used in operator-reported strikes on the Chonhar bridge, the Black Sea Fleet headquarters in Sevastopol, and the September 2023 dry-dock attack that wrecked the submarine Rostov-on-Don, results reported by Ukrainian forces and widely corroborated by imagery but not independently audited. Russia states that its defenses intercept the type routinely, a claim from the Russian defense ministry. The campaign against naval targets, alongside drones, helped push Russia’s fleet out of western Crimea, a story covered in our Kalibr guide from the other side of the same sea.

What replaces Storm Shadow

London and Paris are funding refurbishment to keep stocks viable into the 2030s while the joint FC/ASW program, again under MBDA, develops two successors, a stealthy subsonic cruise missile and a supersonic anti-ship weapon. Storm Shadow’s deep-strike niche is meanwhile getting crowded, as the US extends the Tomahawk family and European nations shop for longer reach under programs spurred by Ukraine’s lessons.

Editor’s read
Storm Shadow’s Ukraine performance settled an old argument, a 1990s-designed missile with terrain-matching and infrared scene guidance beat 2020s jamming that blunted newer satellite-guided weapons. The lesson is not that GPS is useless but that autonomy in the terminal phase is what survives contact with a peer. FC/ASW’s designers have effectively been handed their requirements by Sevastopol.

Storm Shadow SCALP frequently asked questions

What is the range of Storm Shadow?

Officially beyond 250 km. Export versions are capped near 290 km under missile control rules, and the UK and French national versions are widely credited with more, though exact figures are classified.

Is Storm Shadow a stealth missile?

It is low-observable rather than invisible, a shaped composite body flying terrain-hugging profiles that compress radar detection timelines sharply.

What warhead does Storm Shadow carry?

The 450 kg BROACH tandem warhead, a precursor charge followed by a penetrator, designed for bunkers, bridges and hardened shelters.

How has Storm Shadow performed in Ukraine?

Ukrainian forces report successful strikes on bridges, headquarters and dry-docked warships, results corroborated by imagery; Russian interception claims come from the Russian defense ministry.

What will replace Storm Shadow and SCALP?

The Anglo-French FC/ASW program, due in the 2030s, pairing a stealthy cruise missile with a supersonic anti-ship weapon, both from MBDA.
