Turkish HİSAR-A Air Defense System Surfaces in Sudan’s Drone War
Open-source investigators have documented the first confirmed appearances of Turkey’s HİSAR-A low-altitude air defense missile system inside Sudan, marking an unannounced combat debut for the Aselsan/Roketsan-built system in a war neither Ankara nor Khartoum has officially linked it to.
What Happened
Between May and June 2026, open-source analysts identified two separate instances placing the HİSAR-A in Sudan’s civil war. On May 21, 2026, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) released Telegram footage it said showed one of its drones destroying a HİSAR-A launcher vehicle near Rahid al-Nuba in North Kordofan, along the Bara-Omdurman export road roughly 20 kilometers from the capital’s outskirts. The open-source verification outlet Misbar geolocated the strike to coordinates near 14°48’39.14″N, 31°36’16.77″E and matched the vehicle’s radar and launcher configuration to the Turkish system, calling it the first documented appearance of HİSAR-A in the conflict. Accounts aligned with Sudan’s army disputed the authenticity of the RSF footage, and neither claim has been independently verified beyond the geolocation analysis.
A second, separate incident emerged in June 2026, when open-source analyst Rich Tedd published photographs of HİSAR-A missile wreckage recovered in Khartoum. According to open-source accounts, the missile had been fired by Sudan’s Armed Forces (SAF) in an attempt to intercept a drone attack. Neither the SAF nor Turkish officials have issued an official statement confirming the missile’s use, its origin, or the outcome of the engagement. Both incidents should be treated as open-source assessments rather than confirmed military facts.
The Product/System
HİSAR-A is Turkey’s first domestically developed low-altitude air defense missile system, co-developed by state electronics firm Aselsan and missile-maker Roketsan under a program launched in 2007. The upgraded HİSAR-A+ variant entered service with the Turkish army in 2021. The system is mounted on a tracked FNSS ACV-30 chassis and integrates an onboard 3D radar with electro-optical sensors, allowing a single vehicle to detect, track and engage targets without relying on an external fire-control network.
