Helsing Unveils Contra Air Defence System and Two Low-Cost Interceptors

Helsing has unveiled Contra, an AI-controlled air defence system built to engage hundreds or thousands of drones and missiles at once, together with two container-launched interceptors, the AD-1 Inferno and AD-2 Ambush. The company presented the package on 26 October 2026, as reported by Breaking Defense and defence-industry.eu.
Helsing, headquartered in Munich with operations in the UK, says the interceptors are meant to undercut existing missiles on price. No customer for the missiles has been named, and neither interceptor has finished flight testing, according to reporting on the launch.
What Helsing showed on 26 October
Contra is a command-and-control layer with weapons attached. Helsing described it as an autonomous air defence system that fuses sensor data into a single air picture and assigns effectors to threats. It runs on the company’s Altra platform, and the company said operators keep control over decisions and target prioritisation.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Developer | Helsing (Germany, with UK operations) |
| System | Contra, AI-controlled air defence |
| Interceptors | AD-1 Inferno (jet) and AD-2 Ambush (solid rocket) |
| Launch | Container-launched |
| Guidance | Ground radar mid-course, onboard radar seeker for terminal phase |
| Supply chain | Two independent European supply chains (per Niklas Köhler) |
| Production | Planned at Helsing’s Resilience Factories |
| Named missile customer | None disclosed |
Helsing said Contra can also absorb third-party interceptors, counter-drone lasers, guns and net-based systems, typically within days. Several such integrations are being demonstrated to military customers, the company said.
AD-1 Inferno and AD-2 Ambush compared
The two missiles are built for different jobs. Inferno is a jet-powered round that can loiter, swarm and make repeated attack passes, which suits the slower, longer-lived threats. Ambush trades endurance for speed.
| Feature | AD-1 Inferno | AD-2 Ambush |
|---|---|---|
| Propulsion | Jet | Solid rocket motor |
| Role | Loiter, swarm, re-engage | Rapid intercept |
| Speed | Not stated by Helsing (SOFX reports about 435 mph) | Up to Mach 2.5 |
| Range | Not stated by Helsing (SOFX reports about 12 miles) | More than 20 km |
| Launch | Container | Container |
| Seeker | Low-cost all-weather radar seeker | Low-cost all-weather radar seeker |
Both are said to reach up to ten kilometres in altitude. Köhler, Helsing’s co-founder and president, called that "autonomous fire superiority" at height.
Price claims and an unproven timeline
Breaking Defense reported that Helsing gave no hard cost estimates, only that prices would "significantly" undercut existing interceptors. DroneXL, however, quotes co-founder Gundbert Scherf as saying each missile costs under €100,000, against €500,000 to €4 million for existing interceptors, a comparison it attributes to hartpunkt. Those figures come from one outlet and should be treated as company claims.
DroneXL also reports a Helsing representative putting the earliest deliveries at the second quarter of 2027, with AD-1 first flights due in the coming weeks. It adds that one unnamed customer has signed for the Contra command software, not the missiles. Helsing says the cheap seeker, built from commercial off-the-shelf parts, is what drives the saving; the same report notes only a flight video, not a seeker test, has been shown.
That gap between the claimed price and demonstrated hardware is the central open question. Cost per shot is the whole argument for the programme, and it cannot be judged until a seeker has been tested against real targets. That reading is analysis.
The jet-drone threat behind the design
Helsing, citing intelligence reports, says Russia is expanding output of jet-powered drones and cruise missiles, with Geran-4 and Geran-5 production reaching 4,000 units a month combined. New launch sites are reportedly bringing parts of the EU within range, the company said.
Faster jet-powered Gerans are harder for slow interceptor drones and guns to catch, which explains the Mach 2.5 Ambush. Breaking Defense noted that Anduril, Lockheed Martin and CHAOS Industries have each recently shown their own low-cost interceptor options, so the field is crowded.

Helsing Contra FAQ
What is Helsing Contra?
Contra is an AI-controlled air defence system that tracks and engages large numbers of drones and missiles, built on Helsing’s Altra platform. Helsing unveiled it on 26 October 2026.
What are AD-1 Inferno and AD-2 Ambush?
They are Helsing’s two container-launched interceptors. Inferno is jet-powered and can loiter and swarm; Ambush uses a solid rocket motor, reaching up to Mach 2.5 and more than 20 km.
How much do the interceptors cost?
Breaking Defense said no hard figures were given. DroneXL quotes Gundbert Scherf as saying under €100,000 each; that is a company claim.
Who is buying Contra?
No customer was named at the launch. DroneXL reports one unnamed customer has signed for the Contra command software.
When will the interceptors be delivered?
A Helsing representative cited the second quarter of 2027 as the earliest, according to DroneXL. Neither missile has completed flight testing.
