L&T Defence, India’s Leading Private Defense Prime

L&T Defence is the military arm of Larsen & Toubro, the Mumbai-based engineering giant founded in 1938, and it has delivered 100 K9 Vajra-T self-propelled howitzers to the Indian Army under a contract signed in 2017. It also builds warships, submarine hulls, missile launchers and armored vehicles, making it India’s most prominent private-sector defense prime.

What is L&T Defence

Larsen & Toubro began as a small partnership formed by two Danish engineers, Henning Holck-Larsen and Soren Kristian Toubro, and grew into one of India’s biggest engineering and construction groups. Its defense business sits within the precision engineering and systems segment, and it touches almost every domain, from land systems to ships to missile subsystems.

Who owns L&T Defence

L&T Defence is a business unit of Larsen & Toubro, which has no single controlling promoter. Its shareholders are mostly institutions, including large Indian financial institutions, together with public investors. That widely held structure sets it apart from family-controlled rivals and from the state-run champions such as HAL and BEL.

The company’s identity is systems integration and heavy fabrication. It rarely invents a missile from scratch but builds big, complex structures and assemblies, often in partnership with state laboratories or foreign firms. India’s push for domestic content has helped that model.

L&T K9 Vajra and Hanwha

The flagship land program is the K9 Vajra-T. In 2017 India selected L&T, in partnership with South Korea’s Hanwha, to build 100 tracked self-propelled howitzers, with the final units delivered ahead of schedule in the early 2020s. The design is a variant of the Korean K9, adapted for Indian conditions, and our K9 Thunder guide covers the base vehicle. Hanwha’s own profile is in our Hanwha Aerospace article.

That project became a model for private defense manufacturing in India. A Korean design was assembled in Indian factories with Indian content, delivered on time and used by troops along the northern border. It gave L&T credibility that has helped in pitches for other land systems.

L&T Defence shipbuilding and submarines

At Kattupalli, L&T builds patrol vessels for the Indian Coast Guard and Navy, while Hazira has the heavy fabrication capacity needed for submarine work. The company was involved in building the pressure hull of India’s first indigenous nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, which makes it one of very few private firms worldwide with such experience.

L&T has also been reported as a partner in bids for the next generation of conventional submarines, including a teaming arrangement with Spain’s Navantia, whose profile is in our Navantia article. Decisions on such programs have stretched over years, so timelines remain uncertain.

L&T Defence revenue and outlook

Group revenue for Larsen & Toubro runs in the region of 2.5 lakh crore rupees a year, roughly 30 billion dollars, reported, with infrastructure, energy and services making up the bulk. Defense is a small but strategic slice, with large multi-year orders making its order book lumpy. The company has said it sees defense as a growth area, in line with India’s rising military spending and its push for exports.

Risks include long procurement cycles, dependence on foreign technology partners for some designs and competition from other private groups and state-owned yards. Opportunities include follow-on artillery, naval and missile-related work.

Editor’s read
L&T’s strength is execution. In a sector where many Indian programs run late, its record on the K9 Vajra contract stands out. The next test is whether it can win a flagship submarine or combat vehicle order and turn integration skill into a lasting prime contractor role.
