Adani Defence and Aerospace, the Adani Group’s Defense Arm

Adani Defence & Aerospace is the defense and aviation arm of the Adani Group, one of India’s largest conglomerates, and it is betting on small-arms ammunition, unmanned systems, aircraft maintenance and counter-drone technology. The business is still young and small next to the group’s ports, power and airports, but it gives India’s largest private infrastructure empire a foothold in military manufacturing.
What is Adani Defence and Aerospace
The Adani Group, founded by Gautam Adani in Ahmedabad, built its fortune in commodities, ports, power and airports. Defense is a newer vertical, organized under Adani Enterprises, the group’s flagship incubator for new businesses. Its public pitch rests on India’s indigenization drive, which reserves a growing list of items for domestic suppliers and opens the door for private firms that previously faced state-owned ordnance factories as the only source.

Who owns Adani Defence
Adani Defence is wholly controlled within the group structure. The promoter family holds a majority of Adani Enterprises, with institutional investors and the public holding the remainder. That matters for customers because a group of this scale can fund long development cycles, although it also means the defense arm shares the group’s reputation, including scrutiny of its finances.
In late 2024, US authorities unsealed charges against Gautam Adani and others relating to the group’s solar energy business, allegations the group has denied. They do not concern the defense unit, but they are a reminder that Western partners and lenders weigh group-level governance when choosing suppliers.
Adani Defence products and facilities
The best-known physical asset is the Kanpur site, in the state’s defense industrial corridor. The plant is oriented toward small-caliber ammunition for rifles and machine guns, a high-volume field in which India’s armed forces and paramilitary police forces consume large quantities. Adani has described it as a large private-sector facility for such ammunition, a claim that is hard to verify independently.
| Line | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Ammunition | Small-arms cartridges for rifles and machine guns, produced at Kanpur |
| Unmanned aircraft | Medium-altitude long-endurance drones built through foreign technology partnerships |
| Counter-drone | Detection and neutralization systems for military and critical-infrastructure use |
| Aerospace services | Aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul via Air Works |
| Systems integration | Partnerships with foreign primes to localize products in India |
The company’s strategy leans on joint ventures and technology partnerships, a common route in India’s defense industry. Its peers range from the state-run electronics champion in our BEL profile to another private conglomerate covered in our Tata Advanced Systems profile.
Adani Air Works and aviation MRO
Air Works is an Indian maintenance, repair and overhaul provider with hangars across several cities and a customer list that includes airlines and some military operators. The group completed its purchase in 2024, folding it into Adani Defence & Aerospace. The deal gave the business an immediate service revenue stream and hangar capacity that would have taken years to build.
MRO is attractive in defense because it is recurring work. An aircraft sold once is serviced for decades, and India operates large fleets of helicopters and transport aircraft. The state-owned HAL dominates military overhaul today, so private competition is still limited and depends on access to original manufacturer data and approvals.
Adani Defence revenue and outlook
The group does not report defense revenue as a separate line in a way that outside analysts can easily isolate, so any precise figure would be guesswork. It is safe to say that defense contributes only a small fraction of Adani Enterprises’ income, which is dominated by trading, mining services and infrastructure businesses.
The outlook depends on three things: winning domestic ammunition and drone orders, converting technology partnerships into local production, and avoiding reputational drag from group-level controversies. India’s defense budget is growing, and exports of Indian-made systems are rising, so the addressable market is expanding even if competition is crowded.
