T-90M Proryv, Russia’s Best Serial Tank Under the Microscope

The T-90M Proryv is Russia’s most modern tank in serial production, a roughly 48-ton rework of the T-90 line that has become the workhorse of Moscow’s armored force regeneration since 2022. This guide covers the design, the specifications as the manufacturer states them, and the operator-reported record from Ukraine, which is considerably more mixed than the brochures.
T-90M at a glance
The T-90M, industry code Object 188M and nicknamed Proryv, or Breakthrough, is built by Uralvagonzavod in Nizhny Tagil, both as new production and as deep rebuilds of older T-90A hulls. It entered Russian service around 2020 and became the priority armored program once full-scale war consumed Russia’s tank fleet. It is best understood not as a new tank but as the T-72 lineage pushed to its ceiling: same layout, same three-man crew and carousel autoloader, wrapped in a new turret, sights and protection.
How the T-90M differs from older T-90s
The visible change is a new welded turret replacing the old cast dome, carrying Relikt reactive armor instead of Kontakt-5, a remote weapon station and slat screens. Inside sits the Kalina fire control system with the Sosna-U multichannel gunner’s sight, a thermal imager, automatic target tracking and a digital battle management link, addressing the sensor gap that plagued earlier Russian tanks. The 2A46M-5 gun is a more accurate evolution of the standard 125mm, and the uprated 1,130-horsepower diesel restores the mobility the added weight would otherwise cost, according to the manufacturer.

T-90M armor and protection
Protection stacks several layers: composite base armor, Relikt explosive reactive armor claimed to degrade tandem warheads and long-rod penetrators, bar screens around the rear arc, and, on vehicles seen since 2023, improvised roof cages and anti-drone netting that field units add against FPV attacks. Notably absent is a series-fitted hardkill active protection system; Russian sources have long promoted Arena-M integration, but it has not been observed in wide service, and the turret ammunition carousel remains the design’s classic vulnerability, as on every tank of this lineage. Western contemporaries are covered in our Leopard 2 and M1 Abrams guides.
How has the T-90M performed in Ukraine
The T-90M has fought in Ukraine since 2022, and the record is operator-reported from both sides. Ukrainian crews and open-source analysts have documented well over a hundred visually confirmed T-90M losses to mines, artillery, FPV drones and anti-tank missiles, including examples captured intact; one was famously disabled by a first-person-view drone costing a few hundred dollars. Russian channels, for their part, credit the tank’s thermal sights and accuracy in duels and its survivability relative to older T-72B3s.
Both can be true. The T-90M is plainly Russia’s best serial tank, and plainly not immune to the drone-saturated battlefield that has punished every tank type present, Western types included. Its heavy attrition says as much about how Russia employs armor as about the vehicle itself; the pattern echoes what our main battle tank ranking found across the board.

| T-90M Proryv | Current Russian standard, new turret, Relikt, Kalina FCS | Russia |
T-90M frequently asked questions
What is the T-90M Proryv?
Russia’s modernized T-90 main battle tank with a new welded turret, Relikt reactive armor and the Kalina fire control system, in service since about 2020.
How many T-90Ms has Russia lost in Ukraine?
Open-source trackers have visually confirmed well over a hundred destroyed, damaged or captured, operator-reported figures that undercount hidden losses.
Is the T-90M better than the T-72B3?
Yes by most accounts; its sights, gun and protection are a clear step up, though the basic layout and autoloader vulnerability are shared.
Does the T-90M have an active protection system?
No hardkill system is confirmed in wide service; Arena-M integration is claimed by Russian industry but rarely observed.
Who else operates the T-90?
India is the largest operator with license-built T-90S Bhishma tanks, alongside Algeria, Vietnam and others; the T-90M itself serves only Russia.
