India Makes 155 mm Shell Bodies for Europe: Footage Shared

Default post image

Production footage of 155 mm artillery shell bodies being made in India for Europe has been shared. Indian companies are reportedly opening new production facilities quickly to meet rising demand for 155 mm ammunition. We could not independently verify the customer or facility in the footage.

Why India?

The 155 mm shell is the backbone of modern artillery, and the war in Ukraine and export demand are straining global capacity. Indian producers are filling the gap with a cost advantage.

Verified Developments

In July 2026 an Indian firm, Sigma Advanced Systems, won a $104.9 million order from an unnamed North American buyer for 147,000 155 mm base-bleed shell bodies. Balu Forge reportedly signed a five-year contract in February 2026 with a NATO-linked buyer for large-calibre shells. The NIBE and Globe Forge plant in Shirdi, Maharashtra, was presented as the largest private-sector facility of its kind, designed for up to 500,000 155 mm shells a year. Some Indian firms were also reported to be interested in investing in Estonia’s defence industry park; that is still a plan.

What We Could Not Verify

There is no independent confirmation of the plant or customer in the footage, or of which European buyer the shell bodies are destined for. The details rest on a social media post.
