GÖKHAN ERDEM: THE THIRD TURK IN SPACE MAKES HISTORY WITH BLUE ORIGIN
Following the historic scientific missions of Alper Gezeravcı and Tuva Cihangir Atasever under the National Space Program, Turkey has proudly witnessed its third citizen reach the cosmos. Gökhan Erdem, Board Member of Erdem Holding and CEO of Genpa, etched his name in history as the first Turkish businessperson to travel to space and the first Turkish citizen to fly with Jeff Bezos’s aerospace company, Blue Origin.
The NS-34 Mission and the Kármán Line Erdem’s journey took place on August 3, 2025, aboard the fully autonomous, reusable New Shepard rocket during the NS-34 mission. Launching from Blue Origin’s Launch Site One in West Texas, Erdem and five other crew members successfully crossed the Kármán line—the internationally recognized boundary of space at an altitude of 100 kilometers (62 miles).

During the suborbital flight, the crew experienced several minutes of weightlessness. Recalling the monumental experience, Erdem described the sheer power of the rocket and the profound silence that followed engine cutoff. “When the moment came to unbuckle our seatbelts, it was an entirely different level of excitement. I floated inside the cabin and did a somersault. Being able to wave the Turkish flag I brought with me was a source of immense pride,” he stated, noting he also carried the Serbian flag in honor of his wife’s heritage.
Carrying Istanbul to the Stars Erdem’s spaceflight was deeply personal and culturally resonant. His official mission patch was meticulously designed to reflect his roots, featuring the iconic silhouette of the Bosphorus Bridge and the Galata Tower. In a meaningful coincidence, the mission number “34” perfectly aligned with the license plate code of his hometown, Istanbul, effectively carrying the spirit of the transcontinental city to the edge of space.
Inspiration from the Association of Space Explorers The seed for this extraordinary private endeavor was planted during the 34th Planetary Congress of the Association of Space Explorers (ASE), hosted by the Gökmen Aerospace Training Center (GUHEM) in Bursa in 2023. Interacting with veteran astronauts and cosmonauts, Erdem was deeply inspired to pursue his lifelong fascination with the cosmos. “The idea that space is not just a place, but a future, excites me greatly,” Erdem remarked.
A New Era for Private Space Enterprise in Turkey While Turkey’s state-backed National Space Program laid the foundation for the nation’s cosmic ambitions, Gökhan Erdem’s successful flight represents a critical new chapter. It highlights the growing accessibility of commercial spaceflight and demonstrates that the private sector and individual entrepreneurs can play a vital role in expanding a nation’s presence beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
As the global space tourism and commercial aerospace sectors rapidly expand, Erdem has hinted at shifting future investments toward this high-growth industry, signaling that Turkey’s journey to the stars is only just beginning.
