Denmark Orders More Naval Strike Missiles From Kongsberg

Denmark has ordered more Naval Strike Missiles from Kongsberg in a contract worth about NOK 400 million, extending a purchase made in 2025. Kongsberg announced the order on October 19, 2026. The number of missiles was not disclosed, and no delivery dates were given.

The deal is a government-to-government agreement. Norway’s defence materiel agency, FMA, negotiated the contract with Kongsberg on behalf of Denmark’s procurement agency, DALO.

Captain Steen Balslev, head of DALO’s Maritime Division, said “we are strengthening the navy’s missile capability” and that the purchase uses “the same procurement model and working with the same supplier.” DALO described the arrangement as an example of Nordic cooperation on procurement.

DALO says the missiles can engage ships and land targets. The same missile arms Denmark’s new coastal system.

Denmark’s Naval Strike Missile Orders So Far

Denmark became the fifth NATO country to buy the coastal system in 2025, after Poland, the United States, Romania and Latvia. The coastal system combines fire-control equipment, missiles and launch pads. A separate order covers missiles for Danish frigates.

Spread across a frigate fleet and a shore battery, the missile gives Denmark one weapon for both sea and coastal roles. Using one type simplifies training and stockpiles. That is analysis, not something DALO has stated.

What the Naval Strike Missile Offers

The NSM is a subsonic, sea-skimming anti-ship missile that entered service in 2012. Public references list a range of more than 185 kilometres, a launch weight of about 400 kilograms with booster and a speed of Mach 0.93. Guidance combines GPS-aided inertial navigation, a laser altimeter, terrain contour matching and an imaging infrared seeker.

Our comparison of NSM, Harpoon and Exocet sets it against the other main Western ship killers. In coastal form, a Polish-type battery uses three launch vehicles carrying four missiles each, linked to a command vehicle up to 10 kilometres away.

What to watch
Neither Kongsberg nor DALO has said how many missiles are in the order or when they will arrive. Delivery timing, and whether Denmark adds launchers to the coastal system, are the next details to look for.
