F-35 vs J-20: How America’s Stealth Fighter Compares With China’s

The F-35 and the Chengdu J-20 are the only two stealth fighters being built in large numbers, and they are the aircraft most likely to meet if the United States and China ever fight over the western Pacific. They are not mirror images. The F-35 is a medium-sized multirole jet built around sensors and data sharing; the J-20 is a much larger, longer-ranged aircraft designed to push American forces further from China’s coast.
Almost every J-20 figure is an outside estimate, because Beijing publishes very little. This comparison says where the numbers are firm and where they are not.
The short answer
Neither jet is simply better. Western analysts generally credit the F-35 with the lower radar signature and the more mature sensor fusion, backed by a combat record and a fleet shared with 19 allies. The J-20 has the advantages of size: more fuel, more range, a higher top speed and long-range missiles.
Which matters more depends on the fight. Close to China’s coast, the J-20 operates from home with ground radars and missiles behind it. Further out, the F-35’s networking and tanker support count for more.

Stealth: shape tells part of the story
Radar signature figures for both aircraft are classified, so judgements rest on shape. The F-35 has a compact airframe with aligned edges and a shrouded engine nozzle, and it was designed to be hard to see from all directions. We explain the principles in how F-35 stealth works.
The J-20 is well shaped from the front, but it has canard foreplanes ahead of the wing and, on most aircraft, conventional round engine nozzles. Many Western analysts think those features make it easier to detect from the side and rear. Chinese designers argue that the canards are managed by the flight-control software. Nobody outside the two air forces has measured it.
Sensors and networking
This is where the F-35 has the longest lead in experience. Its radar, infrared cameras and electronic warfare suite are fused into one picture and shared with other aircraft, ships and ground units, a system refined over more than a million flight hours.
The J-20 carries the same types of equipment: an active electronically scanned radar, a chin-mounted electro-optical sensor and cameras around the airframe. How well they are fused is unknown. One data point is that Gen. Kenneth Wilsbach, then head of US Pacific Air Forces, said in 2022 that F-35s had come close to J-20s over the East China Sea and that he was impressed by the command and control behind the Chinese jets.
Missiles
The J-20’s main weapon is the PL-15, a radar-guided missile widely estimated to reach around 200 kilometres, with two short-range PL-10s in side bays. That gives it six missiles in stealth configuration.
The F-35 carries four AIM-120 AMRAAMs internally today, with a six-missile upgrade planned for the F-35A and F-35C. The latest AIM-120D is credited with less range than the PL-15, which is why the US is fielding the longer-ranged AIM-260. The details are in which missiles the F-35 can fire. The F-35 also has a gun and a far wider range of bombs.
Numbers and production
Lockheed Martin has delivered more than 1,375 F-35s, but they are spread across 20 countries and three variants. China does not publish J-20 totals. Counts by the researcher Andreas Rupprecht, reported by The War Zone, identified about 300 by autumn 2025 and suggested the fleet could be approaching 500 by mid-2026. The British think-tank RUSI put production at roughly 120 a year.
Location matters more than the global total. A US Air Force general has warned that China could hold a five-to-three advantage in fifth-generation fighters west of the international date line by 2027.
So which would win?
There is no honest single answer. In a head-on, long-range engagement the result would turn on who detects whom first, and that depends on signatures and sensors that neither side has disclosed. The F-35 has flown in combat; the J-20 has not. The J-20 would be fighting near home; the F-35 would not. As with our F-35 vs F-22 comparison, the aircraft is only one part of the system around it.
Frequently asked questions
Is the F-35 better than the J-20?
In sensor fusion, networking and probably all-round stealth, most Western analysts say yes. The J-20 is faster, flies further and carries longer-ranged missiles. Neither claim can be fully verified from public data.
Is the J-20 stealthier than the F-35?
It is generally assessed as less stealthy, particularly from the side and rear, because of its canards and engine nozzles. Its frontal signature is thought to be low. The real figures are secret.
How many J-20s does China have?
China does not say. Open-source estimates in 2025 and 2026 range from about 300 to roughly 500 aircraft, with production put at around 120 a year.
Is the J-20 faster than the F-35?
Yes. The J-20 is estimated to reach about Mach 2, against Mach 1.6 for the F-35.
Has an F-35 ever met a J-20?
Yes, at a distance. A senior US Air Force general said in 2022 that F-35s and J-20s had operated close to each other over the East China Sea. No shots have been exchanged.
Can the J-20 carry more missiles than the F-35?
In stealth configuration it carries six air-to-air missiles against the F-35’s four. A planned upgrade will raise the F-35A and F-35C to six.
