How Long Can an F-35 Stay in the Air? Range and Endurance

How Long Can an F-35 Stay in the Air? Range and Endurance

An F-35 can stay in the air for roughly two to two and a half hours on internal fuel, and for seven hours or more when it refuels from a tanker. There is no official endurance figure, because the answer depends on speed, altitude, weapons load and how often the pilot uses the afterburner.

What Lockheed Martin does publish is range: more than 1,200 nautical miles on internal fuel for the F-35A and F-35C, and more than 900 for the F-35B. This article explains how long an F-35 can stay in the air in practice, what limits it and how air forces stretch it.

How long can an F-35 fly without refuelling?

Nobody publishes a flight-time figure for the F-35, so it has to be worked out from range. The F-35A can cover more than 1,200 nautical miles (about 2,200 km) on internal fuel. Fighters cruise at high subsonic speed, around 480 to 520 knots at altitude, which puts the upper limit for a fuel-efficient flight at about two and a half hours. That is our estimate from published range, not a manufacturer figure.

A combat sortie is shorter. Low-level flight, hard manoeuvring and above all afterburner burn fuel many times faster than a steady cruise, and pilots must land with a reserve. A training flight with dogfighting can be over in little more than an hour. For the basics of the aircraft, see our guide to what the F-35 is.

F-35 range and fuel by variant

The three variants carry different amounts of fuel. The F-35B gives up tank space to the lift fan behind the cockpit, so it has the shortest legs. The carrier-based F-35C has the biggest wing and the most fuel.

Combat radius matters more than range for planning. It is roughly half the range, less an allowance for time over the target and reserves. On internal fuel alone the F-35A reaches further than an F-16 can without drop tanks, because it carries more than twice as much fuel inside the airframe.

How long can an F-35 fly with aerial refuelling?

With tankers, fuel stops being the limit. The F-35A takes fuel through a receptacle behind the cockpit from boom-equipped tankers such as the KC-135 and KC-46. The F-35B and F-35C use a probe that extends from the right side of the nose and plugs into a hose-and-drogue system.

The first F-35 to cross the Atlantic shows what is possible. On 5 February 2016 an Italian Air Force F-35A, the first assembled at Cameri, flew from the Azores to Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland in seven hours against 120-knot headwinds. It refuelled seven times over the two legs of the trip from Italy, according to Defense News.

What limits F-35 endurance?

Once tankers are available, the pilot becomes the limiting factor. The F-35 has one seat, so there is no relief crew, and the pilot cannot leave the cockpit. Air forces manage fatigue on long sorties with planned rest before the flight, food and water in the cockpit, and relief bags.

The aircraft has limits of its own. Engine oil is consumed slowly and cannot be topped up in flight. Weapons and countermeasures run out. Tankers are scarce, and they cannot follow a stealth fighter into defended airspace, so the jet must still reach its target and come back out on what it carries. The oxygen supply is not a constraint, since the jet generates it on board.

Can the F-35 carry external fuel tanks?

Not in US service today. Drop tanks add range, but they also add radar signature and drag, which works against the reason for buying a stealth aircraft. The jet was designed to carry enough fuel internally for most missions.

Israel is the exception. Its strikes on Iran in 2025 and 2026 involved round trips of about 3,000 km and heavy tanker use. On 14 May 2026 the Israeli defence ministry signed a contract worth more than $34 million with Cyclone, an Elbit Systems subsidiary, to develop external fuel tanks for the F-35I Adir, The Aviationist reported. The ministry has not said whether these will be drop tanks or conformal tanks, or how much range they will add.

What to watch
Israel’s external tank programme is the one to follow: a working design could interest other operators with long distances to cover, such as Australia and Japan. The engine core upgrade planned for around 2029 is also expected to trim fuel burn, which would add some range.

Frequently asked questions

How long can an F-35 fly without refuelling?

About two to two and a half hours at an economical cruise, based on its published range. Combat and training sorties with afterburner use are shorter.

What is the range of the F-35?

More than 1,200 nautical miles (2,200 km) on internal fuel for the F-35A and F-35C, and more than 900 nautical miles (1,667 km) for the F-35B.

What is the F-35’s combat radius?

About 669 nautical miles for the F-35A, 505 for the F-35B and 670 for the F-35C on internal fuel.

Can the F-35 refuel in the air?

Yes. The F-35A uses the boom system and the F-35B and F-35C use a probe and drogue.

How much fuel does an F-35 carry?

The F-35A carries 18,250 lb, the F-35B 13,500 lb and the F-35C 19,750 lb internally.

Does the F-35 have drop tanks?

Not in US service. Israel signed a contract in May 2026 to develop external tanks for its F-35I fleet.
