UH-60M Black Hawk Specs, Variants and Operators

The UH-60M Black Hawk is the US Army’s current utility helicopter, a twin-engine Sikorsky design that carries 11 troops at roughly 150 knots and has been built in well over 1,000 examples of the M-model alone. It is the modernized descendant of the UH-60A that entered service in 1979, and its derivatives fly with dozens of armed forces around the world.

What is the UH-60M Black Hawk

The UH-60 was designed in the 1970s to replace the Vietnam-era UH-1 Huey, with requirements for crashworthiness, survivability and the ability to carry a full infantry squad. The M-model, which reached the Army in the mid-2000s, updates that formula with stronger engines, new composite rotor blades, a digital glass cockpit and a modern avionics suite. Sikorsky, now part of Lockheed Martin, builds it in Stratford, Connecticut and Mielec, Poland.

The airframe is designed to absorb impact. Landing gear, seats and structure are built to protect occupants in a hard landing, and critical systems are duplicated or armored. That emphasis made the Black Hawk a standard for military utility helicopters, and it influenced designs abroad, including Türkiye’s licensed T70, discussed in our TUSAS profile.

The UH-60M is not the fastest or largest helicopter in its class, but it balances payload, handling and durability. Door-mounted machine guns provide defensive fire, and the Army can add a fuel tank system or external stores supports for extended missions. For troop insertion the aircraft’s 11-seat capacity is enough for a squad, which fits US infantry organization.

UH-60M Black Hawk variants

Black Hawk family
VariantRole
UH-60MStandard utility and air assault version for the Army
HH-60MMedical evacuation configuration with litters and medical equipment
MH-60MSpecial operations version with added sensors, weapons and refueling probe
UH-60VUpgrade of older UH-60L airframes with a digital cockpit
S-70iInternational version built in Poland for export customers
UH-60M with external storesArmed configuration with pylons for rockets and missiles
Variant naming and roles simplified; customers often specify their own equipment.

The M-model’s success has given the Army a large, standardized fleet. In recent years, Army planning documents have shifted toward cutting some older aircraft and investing in newer types, such as the V-280-derived tiltrotor chosen in 2022, but the Black Hawk is expected to remain in service for decades.

Who operates the UH-60M Black Hawk

The US Army is by far the biggest user, and the National Guard flies many aircraft for disaster response and border support. Overseas customers include Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Mexico, Colombia and Croatia, according to public sales announcements, with others flying related S-70 versions. Across all variants, several thousand Black Hawks have been built, reported.

Export approvals usually come through the US Foreign Military Sales system, which bundles training and support. The aircraft’s commonality with US Army logistics is a selling point, since spare parts and expertise are widely available.

Black Hawk combat record

The Black Hawk entered combat in Grenada in 1983 and Panama in 1989. The best-known episode is the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia, in which two aircraft were shot down by rocket-propelled grenades. The type then became a workhorse in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, flying troop transport, medical evacuation and special operations missions. Losses have mostly come from ground fire, weather and accidents rather than air defense, although in a future conflict against an adversary with advanced air defenses, survivability will be tested more severely.

In that context, rotorcraft are increasingly paired with drones and stand-off weapons, a shift discussed in our ranking of the top 10 attack helicopters.

Editor’s read
The UH-60M is proof that a solid design, updated steadily, can outlast flashier concepts. Its challenge is the next fight: a utility helicopter that thrived in counterinsurgency must adapt to contested airspace, which is what the Army’s next-generation aircraft programs aim to do.

UH-60M Black Hawk frequently asked questions

How many troops can a UH-60M carry?

Eleven infantry troops in addition to a crew of four.

What engines does the UH-60M use?

Two General Electric T700-GE-701D turboshafts, each around 1,994 shaft horsepower.

How fast is the UH-60M Black Hawk?

Cruise speed is about 150 knots, with a maximum in the region of 160 knots, reported.

Who makes the Black Hawk?

Sikorsky, which is part of Lockheed Martin.

Is the Black Hawk being replaced?

Not immediately. The Army is developing new aircraft, but the UH-60M is expected to serve for many years.
