BMC, the Truck Maker Building Turkey’s National Tank

BMC is the company that builds Turkey’s national tank. The Izmir truck maker, jointly owned by Turkish investors and Qatar’s military industry arm, won the Altay production contract over the tank’s own designer and has ridden Kirpi MRAP exports and the BATU engine program into the front rank of Turkish land systems.

From trucks to tanks
BMC spent its first half-century as a commercial truck and bus maker, entering defense through military logistics vehicles. The 2014 change of ownership, bringing in Ethem Sancak’s group and Qatari state capital, remade it into a defense-first house with Gulf financing, and within four years it had taken the two biggest prizes in Turkish land systems: the Altay tank’s serial production and its engine program. Few defense companies anywhere have jumped weight classes that fast, and the Qatari stake gives BMC a built-in export champion in Doha.
Kirpi, the export MRAP
The Kirpi, Turkish for hedgehog, is BMC’s volume product: a 4×4 mine-resistant vehicle hardened by years of counter-insurgency employment, iterated into the heavier Kirpi II and exported to 17 countries’ forces, with Ukraine among the most visible wartime users, hundreds of Kirpis have carried Ukrainian infantry since 2022, and Tunisia, Qatar and others in the book. Alongside it sit the Amazon MRAP and Vuran security vehicle, competing in the same crowded Turkish 4×4 market as Otokar and Nurol Makina, with BMC’s differentiators being production scale and truck-derived logistics.
The Gulf connection
The Qatari 49 percent is strategy, not just capital. Doha’s Armed Forces Industry Committee bought into BMC in 2014 seeking an industrial base its own scale cannot host, and the relationship delivers both ways: Qatar fields Kirpi-family vehicles and Amazon MRAPs, hosts BMC ventures, and effectively underwrites the Altay ecosystem’s financing, while BMC gains a launch export customer and a Gulf showroom. The model, Turkish engineering fused to Gulf sovereign capital, has since been copied across the sector, from shipyards to drones, with BMC as its proof of concept.
The Altay production story
Altay is the program that defines modern BMC. Designed and prototyped by Otokar, the tank’s 250-unit serial production went to BMC in 2018 amid controversy, then stalled for years on German powerpack export blocks, the gap that turned into the BATU program and an interim Korean solution: the first New Altays delivered to the Turkish Army in 2025 run Hyundai-partnered HD1500 powerpacks while the domestic engine matures. BMC’s Ankara plant, purpose-built for the program, now carries Turkey’s heaviest industrial-defense bet, detailed in our tank rankings where Altay debuted at ten.
BATU, the engine bet
BMC Power’s BATU V12, a 1,500-horsepower-class turbo-diesel with Turkish transmission and cooling partners, is the answer to the embargo that stalled Altay: no imported veto point in the powertrain. Qualification on tank testbeds has progressed publicly since 2023, and the engine’s derivatives target the whole heavy-vehicle fleet beyond Altay. If BATU matures on schedule it becomes one of only a handful of Western-aligned 1,500hp tank engines in production anywhere, an export product in its own right; if it slips, Altay’s schedule slips with it, which is why the engine, not the hull, is the program’s real milestone to watch.
