Kongsberg to Supply Remote Weapon Stations for Poland’s K2 Tanks

Kongsberg has signed a contract worth about NOK 700 million with Hyundai Rotem to supply Protector RS4 remote weapon stations for the Polish Armed Forces’ K2 tanks and support vehicles. The company announced the deal on October 22.
The stations will go onto three K2 variants: the main battle tank, the armoured recovery vehicle and the combat engineering vehicle. The first systems are due to ship for vehicle integration in spring 2027.

Kjetil Reiten Myhra, executive vice president of Kongsberg and president of its Defence Systems division, said the contract “further strengthens the long-standing cooperation between KONGSBERG and Hyundai Rotem Company.” He said it reinforces Kongsberg’s position as a leading supplier of remote weapon systems.
What a Remote Weapon Station Adds to a Tank
A remote weapon station lets a crew fire a machine gun or similar weapon from inside the armoured hull, using cameras and a display instead of exposing a gunner on the roof. On a main battle tank it typically supplements the main gun against infantry and light targets. The RS4 is a member of Kongsberg’s Protector family, which the company supplies to many armed forces.
The recovery and engineering variants are less often armed, so fitting them with the same station gives those vehicles a self-protection weapon while they work close to the front. That reading is analysis, not a company statement.
Three K2 Variants, Three Jobs
| Variant | Role | Why a weapon station matters |
|---|---|---|
| Main battle tank | Frontline combat | Adds a secondary weapon controlled from under armour |
| Armoured recovery vehicle | Recovers damaged vehicles under fire | Provides self-defence while stationary at a recovery site |
| Combat engineering vehicle | Clears obstacles and builds routes | Covers the vehicle while crews work near contact |
Poland is the K2’s main export customer, and support variants form part of the wider Polish programme. Hyundai Rotem is the K2 prime contractor.
