Top 10 Aerial Refueling Tankers in the World (2026)

Fighters and bombers grab the headlines, but no modern air force can project power without tankers. Aerial refueling turns a short-range fighter into a long-range strike platform and keeps surveillance aircraft on station for hours. Here are the ten most important tanker aircraft in service or entering service in 2026.
1. Airbus A330 MRTT (Europe)
The A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport is the market leader outside the US. It carries more than 110 tonnes of fuel without extra tanks and can also move passengers and cargo. Operators include the UK, France, Australia, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Canada and a NATO multinational fleet.
2. Boeing KC-46A Pegasus (United States)
Based on the 767, the KC-46A is the US Air Force’s new standard tanker, with both a boom and hose-and-drogue systems. Its remote vision system had a troubled start, but the USAF now plans to buy well over 180, and Japan and Israel have ordered it.
3. Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker (United States)
First flown in the 1950s, the KC-135 is still the most numerous tanker in the world, with hundreds in US service. Upgraded engines and avionics keep it flying, and it will remain essential well into the 2030s.
4. Xi’an Y-20U (China)
The Y-20U is the tanker version of China’s Y-20 heavy transport. It gives the PLA Air Force the ability to extend the range of J-20 and J-16 fighters and H-6 bombers far beyond China’s coast, a key part of its push into the western Pacific.
5. Ilyushin Il-78M-90A (Russia)
Russia’s Il-78 tankers support long-range bombers such as the Tu-95 and Tu-160. The new Il-78M-90A, based on the modernised Il-76MD-90A, has better engines and avionics, though deliveries have been slow.
6. Lockheed Martin KC-130J (United States)
The KC-130J is a tanker version of the C-130J Super Hercules. It can refuel helicopters and tiltrotors as well as fighters, and operate from short, rough airstrips, making it vital for the US Marine Corps.
7. Airbus A400M Atlas (Europe)
The A400M is mainly a transport, but with refueling pods it becomes a tanker for fighters and helicopters. Its ability to fly slowly makes it one of the few large aircraft able to refuel helicopters in flight.
8. Embraer KC-390 Millennium (Brazil)
Brazil’s KC-390 jet transport can also act as a tanker, refuelling fighters such as the Gripen and even other KC-390s. Its combination of speed, cargo capacity and tanking has won it customers across Europe and Asia.
9. Boeing KC-767 (Japan and Italy)
The KC-767 was the predecessor of the KC-46. Japan and Italy each operate a small fleet, using them to support F-35s and Eurofighters on long-range missions and international deployments.
10. Boeing MQ-25 Stingray (United States)
The MQ-25 is the world’s first carrier-based unmanned tanker. Designed to refuel US Navy F/A-18s, EA-18Gs and F-35Cs, it will free up fighters currently used as tankers and extend the reach of the carrier air wing.
Why tankers matter
In a Pacific conflict, distances are enormous and bases are few. That is why the US, China and their allies are all investing heavily in tankers, and why tankers are likely to be among the first targets in any future war.
