Cruise Missile
AGM-158 JASSM
The AGM-158 JASSM is a low-observable air-launched cruise missile made by Lockheed Martin in the United States, in service since 2003. It carries a 450 kg penetrating warhead and, in the JASSM-ER version, reaches beyond 925 km.
What Is the AGM-158 JASSM? Overview, History and Development
The Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile program began in 1995 after the Tri-Service Standoff Attack Missile was cancelled. The first flight took place in 1999 and the missile reached initial operating capability on the B-52H in 2003. It weighs about 1,021 kg, is about 4.27 m long and carries a 450 kg WDU-42/B penetrating blast-fragmentation warhead. Guidance combines inertial navigation, GPS and an imaging infrared terminal seeker with automatic target recognition.
The base JASSM reaches about 370 km, and the AGM-158B JASSM-ER flies over 925 km. Its faceted airframe and hidden inlet make it low-observable, but it is subsonic at about Mach 0.8 and not invisible. Carriers include the B-52H, B-1B, B-2, F-15E, F-16, F/A-18E/F and F-35. Unit cost is about 1.5 million dollars. Customers include Australia, Poland, Finland, the Netherlands and Japan. The US used it in Iraq in 2003 and in 19 missiles in the April 2018 Syria strikes.

How much does a JASSM cost?
An AGM-158 JASSM costs about 1.5 million US dollars per missile, and the JASSM-ER is around 1.5–1.7 million dollars, according to US Defense Department contract data. LRASM, the anti-ship variant, is more expensive.
What is the range of the JASSM?
The AGM-158 JASSM has a range of about 370 km, while the JASSM-ER reaches over 925 km. The official figure for the extended-range version is stated as more than 500 nautical miles.
Is the JASSM stealth?
The AGM-158 JASSM is low-observable, not invisible. Its faceted shape and hidden inlet reduce radar visibility, but it is a subsonic cruise missile at about Mach 0.8 and can still be detected and intercepted.
JASSM vs Tomahawk: which is better?
The JASSM and the Tomahawk fill different niches: JASSM-ER reaches over 925 km and is low-observable, launched from aircraft, while Tomahawk flies from ships and submarines. Both are subsonic and cost around 1.5 million dollars or more.
Which countries have the JASSM?
The AGM-158 JASSM is operated by the United States, and its export customers include Australia, Poland, Finland, the Netherlands and Japan for JASSM-ER. The US has also notified sales to some Gulf states, with no deliveries confirmed.
Has Türkiye bought the JASSM?
Türkiye has not bought the JASSM. It uses domestic SOM-J and ATMACA missiles, which come from TÜBİTAK SAGE and Roketsan, and Turkish needs in this category are met by national production.
