In a decisive move to secure its defense supply chains, the Australian Government has signed a $120 million contract with Lockheed Martin Australia to expand the domestic manufacturing of the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS). Marking a critical milestone under the Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance (GWEO) Enterprise, this investment brings Melbourne-based companies Moog Australia and AW Bell into the global supply network. Following the successful test-firing of the first Australian-assembled GMLRS earlier this year, Canberra is rapidly shifting from assembly to end-to-end sovereign production.

Building a Sovereign Defense Industrial Base

As global demand for precision munitions stretches Western supply lines, Australia is prioritizing self-reliance. This $120 million investment represents the next evolutionary step in establishing a truly domestic missile manufacturing capability.

The strategy aims to reduce single-source dependency on the United States by gradually localizing the production of highly technical sub-systems. This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to a “Future Made in Australia,” backed by an allocation of over $500 million through 2030 to build robust local capacity.

To strengthen its sovereign Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance (GWEO) capabilities, Australia has signed a $120 million contract with Lockheed Martin to localize the production of critical GMLRS components.

The Local Pioneers: Moog Australia and AW Bell

The localized production will not just be basic assembly. Lockheed Martin Australia has selected two specialized local firms to manufacture some of the most complex mechanical components of the GMLRS rocket:

From Assembly to Combat-Ready Production

The timing of this contract builds on the momentum generated in April 2026, when the Australian Defence Force successfully test-fired the first GMLRS assembled at the Port Wakefield facility in South Australia.

Fired from an M142 HIMARS launcher at the Woomera Test Range, the successful demonstration validated the initial stages of Australia’s domestic setup. The GMLRS, with a highly accurate range exceeding 70 kilometers, serves as the primary munition for Australia’s growing HIMARS fleet. Moving forward, the integration of locally manufactured CAS units and canards will transform the Port Wakefield site from an assembly plant into a cornerstone of regional deterrence.
