Black Hawk Rocket-Launches Altius-700 in Autonomous Strike Test
A U.S. Army H-60M Black Hawk has rocket-launched an Anduril Altius-700 from an external pylon and directed a team of the drones to find and strike a ground target without operator intervention, in a trial conducted during Project Convergence Capstone 6 in the Mojave Desert. Footage of the test was released on 31 August.
The demonstration is a step change in how the Army intends to use its utility helicopter fleet. Rather than arming the Black Hawk itself, the service is turning it into a launch platform — a mothership that delivers sensors and precision strike far beyond the reach of anything mounted on the airframe.
What was demonstrated
The trial involved a rocket-boosted launch rather than the tube ejection used in earlier tests. Rocket assistance gives the vehicle immediate airspeed on separation, which widens the range of speeds and altitudes at which the helicopter can release it and reduces the risk of a low-energy launch fouling the airframe.
Once airborne, the Altius-700s operated as what Anduril described as a hunter-killer team: the aircraft located the target autonomously, passed the track across the formation, and one member struck it. Multiple launched effects were controlled simultaneously across the desert range. Testing ran over three days in extreme heat, which the Army treated as a validation of environmental tolerance as much as of the tactic.
The trial followed earlier work at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia, in June that focused on medium-range effects.
“Successfully launching Air-Launched Effects from a Black Hawk is more than a milestone, it is a leap forward,” said Brig. Gen. Kevin Chaney, deputy portfolio acquisition executive for maneuver air.
The system
The Altius-700 is a modular launched-effect air vehicle designed to carry interchangeable payloads — intelligence and surveillance sensors, electronic warfare packages, communications relay, or a warhead. The weaponised Altius-700M variant carries a warhead of up to 33 pounds against vehicles, vessels and infrastructure, with a range of roughly 160 kilometres.
The Army has designated the 700M as its Long-Range Precision Munition, a requirement created because the AGM-114 Hellfire’s roughly 11-kilometre reach forces the launching helicopter well inside modern short-range air defence envelopes. A munition with more than ten times that reach changes where the helicopter has to be when it shoots.
Why the Black Hawk
Anti-armour and precision strike from Army aviation has traditionally belonged to the AH-64 Apache. Using an H-60 as the launch platform does not make it a gunship; it makes the utility fleet a distributed magazine. Black Hawks are numerous, they are already deployed everywhere the Army operates, and giving them the ability to launch effects means strike capacity is no longer concentrated in a smaller, more heavily tasked attack fleet.
The Army is pursuing the same concept across platforms, including the unmanned U-Hawk variant, which carries launched effects internally rather than on external wings.
The reasoning behind it
The driver is survivability. Modern short-range air defence and man-portable missiles have made the airspace helicopters historically operated in far more dangerous, a lesson delivered repeatedly in Ukraine, where rotary-wing losses on both sides ran high and attack profiles shifted quickly toward stand-off lofted-rocket techniques.
Launched effects respond to that by separating the sensor and the shooter from the crewed aircraft. The helicopter releases the vehicle and turns away; the drone flies the dangerous portion of the mission. If it is lost, the cost is a munition, not an aircraft and its crew.
The autonomy in this trial is the more consequential part. A drone that finds its own target, shares that information across a formation and prosecutes the strike compresses the sensor-to-shooter chain to the point where the helicopter crew’s role becomes launching and supervising rather than searching and aiming. That raises questions about control and engagement authority that the Army has not fully answered publicly — how much discretion these systems exercise, and where a human decision sits in the sequence, remain matters of doctrine still being worked out.
What it means
For allied armies operating H-60 variants — a group that spans NATO, the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific — the concept is transferable. Launched effects are a payload rather than a platform, and the modification required to carry them is modest compared with acquiring new aircraft.
The technical demonstration is largely done. What remains is the harder work: integrating launched effects into how aviation units actually fight, building the training and control architecture to manage several autonomous vehicles at once, and settling the rules governing what these systems may decide on their own.
