Hensoldt AG is a German sensor and defence electronics company based in Taufkirchen near Munich, known for the TRML-4D air-defence radar, the Spexer short-range radar, optronics and electronic warfare systems. It was carved out of Airbus in 2017 and has been listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange since September 2020.

Hensoldt reported revenue of €2,455 million for 2025 and, according to its results release, about 9,000 employees after the ESG acquisition. Its order backlog stood at €8,833 million at the end of 2025 and passed €10 billion in the first half of 2026. The German government and Italy’s Leonardo are its two largest shareholders, and its main customers are European armed forces, especially the Bundeswehr.

What Are the TRML-4D and Spexer Radars?

The TRML-4D is a solid-state active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar for ground-based air defence. Wikipedia gives it an instrumented range of 250 km and the ability to track 1,500 targets, with fighter-type targets tracked beyond 120 km. It is best known as the sensor of the Diehl IRIS-T SLM air-defence system, and Hensoldt presented it at Eurosatory in 2018.

The Spexer is a short-range radar that detects and classifies ground, sea and low-flying air targets. According to Military Embedded Systems it is already integrated into Rheinmetall’s Skyranger 30, which our Rheinmetall company profile covers. In July 2025 Hensoldt announced a contract worth more than €340 million to deliver TRML-4D and Spexer radars to Ukraine, the same report said.

How Many Employees Does Hensoldt Have?

Hensoldt’s FY2025 results release gives about 9,000 employees, a figure that reflects the acquisition of ESG. Wikipedia records 6,316 employees in December 2021, so headcount has grown by roughly half in four years.

Hensoldt Revenue and Financial Results

In the first half of 2026 Sensors delivered €955 million of revenue and Optronics €219 million, up 63.2%. Order intake in Optronics jumped to €971 million from €164 million a year earlier. Hensoldt confirmed its 2026 guidance of about €2,750 million in revenue and an adjusted EBITDA margin of 18.5% to 19%. It proposed a dividend of €0.55 per share for 2025.

Who Owns Hensoldt?

Hensoldt’s investor page lists the Federal Republic of Germany with 25.1%, Leonardo S.p.A. with 22.8% and a free float of 52.1%, as of 8 December 2023. The German stake is held through the state development bank KfW, which bought 25.1% in March 2021. In April 2021 Hensoldt announced that Leonardo would take 25.1% from a KKR-advised holding company, and Army Technology reported a price of €606 million and completion in January 2022. The KKR vehicle had kept about 18% after the two sales, and the investor page no longer lists KKR.

Recent Developments and Contracts

On 11 June 2026 the Dutch defence ministry announced Hensoldt as main supplier for an electronic warfare upgrade, according to Stockopedia. The systems are meant to disrupt or deceive enemy radio communications and can also be used for tactical cyber operations. They will be mounted on Piranha 5 armoured vehicles from General Dynamics European Land Systems, and the value was not disclosed.

Hensoldt is also one of the eight companies in Team Gen 6, the Airbus-led group that launched at the ILA Berlin air show in June 2026 after the Franco-German FCAS fighter effort collapsed. Euronews lists Airbus, MBDA, Hensoldt, Diehl Defence, MTU Aero Engines, Liebherr, Autoflug and Rohde & Schwarz as members. The group is competing for a German sixth-generation fighter.
