Romanian F-16s Shoot Down Two Jet-Powered Geran Drones Over the Black Sea

Two Romanian Air Force F-16s shot down two jet-powered attack drones of the Geran family over Romania’s Black Sea territorial waters on Saturday, 17 October 2026, the Romanian Ministry of National Defence (MApN) said. Both drones were destroyed within minutes of entering Romanian airspace near Sulina, at the mouth of the Danube. The ministry did not say which country launched them.

What happened over the Black Sea?
According to the MApN’s first statement, radar picked up a group of aerial targets about 120 km east of Snake Island heading south-west. Two F-16s already on Air Policing alert took off from Borcea at 17:43. The first target crossed into Romanian airspace at 17:59 and was shot down by one of the jets at 18:01. The second entered at 18:01 and was downed by the other F-16 at 18:05.

In an update later that evening, the ministry said the targets were “jet-powered attack drones from the Geran family”. The first had flown for two minutes in Romanian airspace, the second for five. Interim Defence Minister Radu Miruță, who announced the engagement minutes after it ended, put the locations at about 25 km south-east and 20 km east of Sulina, Euronews reported. The Kyiv Independent noted that the MApN did not specify which nation the drones belonged to, and that Geran-family drones are frequently used by Russia to attack targets in Ukraine.
A week of incidents
The MApN said that in the week before Saturday its radars had tracked aerial targets close to the border inside Ukrainian airspace on eight separate occasions, and that in four of them unmanned aircraft briefly entered Romanian airspace. Over the same period several merchant ships were hit by drones in the Black Sea, including in Romanian territorial waters. In the early hours of the same day, a separate alert saw two Spanish Air and Space Force F-18s on enhanced Air Policing scrambled from the 57th Air Base at Mihail Kogălniceanu after a target was detected over Ukraine heading towards Tulcea county; no airspace violation was reported.
Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu wrote on X that NATO would discuss Black Sea “defence and deterrence” at an upcoming meeting. On 15 October President Nicușor Dan told Politico that the North Atlantic Council would meet on the Black Sea situation, that invoking Article 5 was “not now” being discussed and that Romania had not requested Article 4 consultations. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said the alliance had already increased counter-drone capabilities on its eastern flank.
What are Geran drones?
Geran is the name used in Russia for one-way attack drones derived from the Iranian Shahed family. The best known, the propeller-driven Geran-2, is covered in our Shahed-136 / Geran-2 explainer. The MApN specified that the drones downed on Saturday were jet-powered, which means they fly faster than the piston-engine models and leave less time to intercept. For the wider category, see our top 10 loitering munitions; for the aircraft that made the intercept, our F-16 Fighting Falcon guide.
What we do not know yet
The ministry has not said which weapons the F-16s used, whether debris has been recovered or where exactly the drones were launched from. We will update this report as Romanian or NATO officials release more information.
