Top 10 Strategic Bombers in the World in 2026

Long-range bombers are among the most powerful weapons a country can own: aircraft that can fly across oceans and deliver nuclear or conventional strikes almost anywhere. Only three countries operate true strategic bomber fleets: the United States, Russia and China. This ranking weighs range, payload, survivability and the weapons each aircraft can carry.
- Countries with strategic bomber fleets: US, Russia, China
- Only stealth bombers in service: B-2 (US)
- Next-generation: B-21 (US), H-20 (China, in development)
- Oldest still flying: B-52 and Tu-95 (1950s designs)
1. B-21 Raider (United States)
The world’s first sixth-generation bomber is a stealthy flying wing designed to penetrate the most advanced air defenses. It is in flight testing, with the first operational aircraft due at Ellsworth Air Force Base in 2027, and the Air Force plans to buy at least 100.
2. B-2 Spirit (United States)
The only stealth bomber in service today. Just 19 remain, but they can carry the 30,000-pound GBU-57 bunker buster and nuclear bombs, and they flew one of the longest strike missions in history against Iran’s nuclear sites in 2025.
3. Tu-160M “Blackjack” (Russia)
The largest and fastest bomber ever built, able to exceed Mach 2. Russia has restarted production of the modernized Tu-160M, which carries Kh-101 and Kh-102 cruise missiles.
4. B-52H Stratofortress (United States)
First flown in the 1950s, the B-52 is being re-engined and upgraded as the B-52J to serve into the 2050s. It carries the largest weapons load of any US bomber, including cruise and hypersonic missiles, and the LRASM anti-ship missile is being added.
5. B-1B Lancer (United States)
A supersonic swing-wing bomber with the largest internal payload in the US fleet. It no longer has a nuclear role but is a key carrier of JASSM and LRASM missiles. It will retire once enough B-21s arrive.
6. H-6N (China)
The latest version of China’s H-6, derived from the Soviet Tu-16, can refuel in the air and carry a large air-launched ballistic missile. It gave China’s air force a nuclear role for the first time in decades.
7. Tu-95MS “Bear” (Russia)
A turboprop bomber dating to the 1950s that remains the backbone of Russia’s air-launched cruise missile force and has fired hundreds of missiles at Ukraine. Several were damaged in Ukraine’s 2025 “Spiderweb” drone attack.
8. Tu-22M3 “Backfire” (Russia)
A supersonic long-range bomber used against Ukraine with Kh-22 and Kh-32 missiles. Russia is upgrading some to the Tu-22M3M standard.
9. H-6K (China)
A modernized H-6 with new engines and six wing pylons for CJ-20 cruise missiles, frequently seen flying near Taiwan and with Russian bombers over the Pacific.
10. H-20 (China, in development)
China’s future stealth bomber, believed to be a flying wing similar to the B-2. It has not been publicly shown, but the Pentagon expects it to appear within the next decade.
The big picture
The US remains far ahead, with the only stealth bombers and a new one on the way. Russia’s fleet is old and was hit hard in Ukraine’s 2025 drone strikes, while China is quietly building toward its own stealth bomber to complete a full nuclear triad.
