Northrop Grumman and True Anomaly Build GHOST-R Reconnaissance Satellites

The Defense Innovation Unit and the Space Force have picked Northrop Grumman and True Anomaly to build prototype satellites under GHOST-R, a programme to image objects in geosynchronous orbit from close range. The awards were announced on September 18, 2026, and Defense News covered them on October 1.
GHOST-R stands for Geosynchronous High-Resolution Optical Space-Based Tactical Reconnaissance. The satellites are due to launch by 2028, with government-owned operations by 2029. Contract values were not disclosed.
GHOST-R Prototype Awards Go to Northrop Grumman and True Anomaly
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Customers | Defense Innovation Unit and Space Force Space Systems Command |
| Contractors | Northrop Grumman, True Anomaly |
| Value | Not disclosed |
| Mission | High-resolution space-to-space imagery of objects in geosynchronous orbit |
| Launch | By 2028 |
| Operations | Government-owned and operated by 2029 |
| Announced | September 18, 2026 |
The satellites will characterise resident space objects in geosynchronous Earth orbit, more than 22,000 miles above the planet. Gen. Stephen Whiting, the Space Force’s Space Command leader, said “to negate threats in space, we must find, fix, track, and target those threats.”
Two Different Approaches to Geosynchronous Imaging
| Feature | Northrop Grumman | True Anomaly |
|---|---|---|
| Spacecraft | ESPASat-L, a small spacecraft, with a commercial optical sensor | Jackal |
| Timeline | Accelerated 24 months, per Northrop | Not stated in available reports |
| Company-stated focus | Speed and a commercial-based design | Manoeuvrability, sensing and autonomy at a price that enables scale |
Ryan Tintner of Northrop Grumman said space is “becoming more congested and contested every day.” Evan Rogers of True Anomaly said the reconnaissance architecture “can no longer rely on a handful of exquisite assets.”
How GHOST-R Fits Into the RG-XX Plan
GHOST-R is tied to RG-XX, the Space Force’s next-generation geosynchronous reconnaissance and surveillance constellation. Trade reports describe the prototypes as a way to lower RG-XX costs by using commercially developed spacecraft, buses and sensors. Defense News also noted an Andromeda contract pool for RG-XX worth up to $6.2 billion.
Col. Bryon McClain said working with DIU on GHOST-R is “a true force multiplier.” Whether the prototypes become a production programme depends on how they perform after launch, and the Space Force has not described a follow-on buy.
