What Is the Kamov Ka-27 / Ka-29? Overview, History and Development

The Ka-27, known to NATO as Helix, first flew in 1973 and entered Soviet Navy service as the Ka-27PL in 1981. Its two contra-rotating rotors of about 15.9 m remove the need for a tail rotor and keep it compact on ship decks. Two Klimov TV3-117V engines of about 2,200 hp each give a top speed of about 250 km/h, a range of about 800 km and a ceiling of about 5,000 m.

The Ka-27PL carries a search radar, dipping sonar, sonobuoys and torpedoes with a crew of 3. The Ka-29 assault version carries up to 16 troops and has armour and a 30 mm gun. The Ka-31 carries a rotating radar, with about 14 in India. Ka-28 is the export version. Total production is about 270 to 300. Operators include Russia, Ukraine in limited numbers, India, China, Vietnam and Algeria. The Ka-29 was used in Georgia in 2008 and in Ukraine.
