What Is the Boxer? Overview, History and Development

The Boxer’s first prototype appeared in 2002, and Dutch and German service began in 2011. A drive module of about 25.7 tonnes takes swappable mission modules, including APC, command, ambulance and engineer versions. A 720 hp MTU diesel gives about 103 km/h and a range of about 1,050 km, at around 36.5 tonnes.

Public counts exceed 1,500 vehicles. The UK plans 623, built at Telford and Stockport; Australia ordered 211 Boxer CRV with Lance turrets; Lithuania has 88 Vilkas; and Qatar reportedly ordered about 100. Germany ordered the Schakal with a 30 mm turret to replace the Fuchs. The Boxer served in Afghanistan with the Dutch and in Mali with Germany. Boxer also carries the RCH 155 wheeled howitzer.
