AM General Company Profile, Humvee and JLTV Maker Explained

AM General is the Indiana truck maker that has built more than 300,000 Humvees since 1984 and stunned the industry in 2023 by taking the JLTV program away from Oshkosh. Privately held by KPS Capital Partners, the South Bend firm supplies light tactical vehicles to the US military and dozens of export customers, and its two flagship products now bracket the entire market it created.

Who owns AM General
AM General descends from the military-vehicle lineage of Willys-Overland, builder of the original World War II jeep, through Kaiser Jeep’s defense division. American Motors spun the business out under the AM General name in 1971, and after decades under various corporate parents, including Renco and then MacAndrews & Forbes, the private equity firm KPS Capital Partners bought the company in 2020.
Private ownership keeps AM General’s numbers out of public filings, but it has not starved the firm of capital. KPS bankrolled the investment behind the JLTV recompete bid and a modernization of the Mishawaka production complex that the company says lifted both capacity and quality, spending that paid off in the biggest upset the tactical-vehicle market has seen in a decade.
The Humvee story
AM General won the Army’s High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle competition in 1983 and delivered the first HMMWVs in 1984. The Humvee became the definitive light military truck of the late twentieth century, more than 300,000 built, service in every American conflict since Panama, and a licensing detour that put the civilian Hummer H1 on suburban driveways. Iraq’s IED campaign exposed the limits of its armor and pushed the Pentagon toward heavier MRAPs and eventually the JLTV, but the Humvee never left, it remains the backbone utility vehicle of the US force and dozens of allies.
The company keeps the line alive with upgrades, new powertrains, digital electronics and the Humvee Saber variant with an armored monocoque hull. It also builds ambulance and shelter-carrier versions, and its volume production of a common chassis is exactly the kind of industrial base the Army values when it thinks about surge capacity.
AM General and the JLTV
| Program | Status |
|---|---|
| HMMWV / Humvee family | In production since 1984; ongoing US and export orders, upgrades and remanufacture |
| JLTV A2 | Won the US recompete in February 2023; follow-on production of the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle |
| Humvee Saber | Company-funded armored evolution marketed at home and abroad |
| Ambulances and specialty trucks | M997A3 and related variants for US and foreign customers |
The February 2023 JLTV A2 award was the shock result, the incumbent Oshkosh had designed the vehicle and built the first 20,000, yet the Army’s build-to-print recompete let AM General undercut it for the follow-on tranche. Standing up a new production line for another company’s design is unforgiving work, and public reporting has tracked early rate and supply-chain challenges, but the deal put AM General at the center of the light tactical vehicle market’s next two decades, alongside competitors like Textron chasing adjacent niches.
AM General exports and outlook
Humvees serve across Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and Asia, often through US security-assistance programs, and Ukraine has received substantial numbers of HMMWVs from US stocks since 2022. The export question for the 2030s is whether JLTV A2 becomes the same kind of franchise, foreign military sales of the Oshkosh-built JLTV already seeded allied fleets, and AM General now owns the production future of that vehicle. Between two proven products and a hot-war demand signal for light mobility, the company’s order pipeline looks stronger than at any point since the MRAP era.
