Spy Alarm at NATO Headquarters: 1 Person Arrested

A Chinese-born Canadian intern working at NATO’s military headquarters in Belgium has been arrested on charges of conducting espionage for a third country.

According to a statement from the Belgian Federal Prosecutor’s Office, the intern, who was stationed at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons—widely regarded as NATO’s strategic nerve center—was detained on suspicion of “spying for a third country and membership in a criminal organization.”

The investigation was executed in tight coordination with national security agencies. The suspect initially drew the attention of security personnel while operating within the NATO facility in Casteau, prompting an immediate alert to Belgian authorities.

“SHAPE security services detected the suspicious behavior and promptly reported the situation to the Belgian General Intelligence and Security Service (SGRS). The file was then assumed by the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, and the active investigation was handed over to the Charleroi Federal Judicial Police,” the official statement read.

Searches Conducted at Office and Residence

As part of the ongoing counter-intelligence probe, authorities carried out comprehensive search operations at both the suspect’s private residence and their designated workspace inside the heavily guarded SHAPE compound. Specialized cybercrime units and technical forensic teams provided critical support during the raids. Following the searches, an investigating judge formally remanded the suspect into custody.

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office emphasized that the successful apprehension was the direct result of a multi-layered, highly integrated security collaboration among SHAPE, SGRS, and the federal police.

SHAPE serves as NATO’s premier military headquarters and the central command for Allied Command Operations. It holds the ultimate responsibility for the strategic planning, command, and execution of all global operations for the 32-member transatlantic security alliance.
