Yasen-class submarine (Project 885M)
The Yasen class (Project 885M) is a Russian nuclear-powered multipurpose attack submarine built by Sevmash and designed by Malakhit, in service since 2014. NATO calls it Graney, and five boats are commissioned with Kalibr, Oniks and Zircon missiles.
What Is the Yasen-class submarine (Project 885M)? Overview, History and Development
The lead boat, K-560 Severodvinsk, was laid down in 1993, launched in 2010 and commissioned in December 2013 or 2014. Later Project 885M boats are Kazan and Novosibirsk (2021), Krasnoyarsk (2023) and Arkhangelsk (December 2024), for five in service. A boat displaces about 8,600 t surfaced and 13,800 t submerged, is 139 m long, and reaches about 31 knots, with a test depth of about 520 m and a crew of about 64.
Armament is ten 533 mm torpedo tubes and 32 vertical cells for Kalibr and Oniks cruise missiles, plus Zircon on Yasen-M, with up to 40 missiles in a reported loadout. A single KPM reactor of about 200 MW drives a pump-jet. Western estimates reportedly place it near the Virginia class in quietness. Zircon test firings from Severodvinsk took place from 2020 to 2022. Cost is about US$1–2 billion, reportedly. Only Russia operates it. Rivals include Virginia, Astute and Type 095.
