What Is the Patria AMV / AMV XP? Overview, History and Development

Development of the Patria Armoured Modular Vehicle began in the late 1990s, with first prototypes in 2001 and first deliveries to Finland in 2004. The platform is a 16 to 32 tonne 8×8 whose weight depends on the protection and turret fitted. It is offered as a 12.7 mm remote weapon station APC, a 30 mm or 40 mm turreted IFV, and a carrier for the 120 mm NEMO mortar, plus command and ambulance versions.

About 1,800 vehicles have been built. Poland is the largest user with roughly 900 licence-built Rosomak vehicles made at Siemianowice Slaskie (approximate). Other operators are Finland, Slovakia, Croatia, South Africa, the UAE and Sweden. South Africa’s Denel Badger IFV is a local derivative, with about 238 ordered (approximate). The AMV XP weighs up to 30 t, uses a 500 hp Scania DC13 engine and improves protection. Rivals include the Boxer, Stryker, VBCI, Piranha V and Pandur II.
