Otokar Akrep
The Otokar Akrep is a Turkish 4×4 light armoured vehicle made by Otokar, part of the Koç Group, in production since 1994. It is used by Türkiye for patrol, reconnaissance and internal security, and a heavier Akrep II and electric Akrep IIe followed.
Overview
Otokar built the Akrep (“Scorpion”) prototype in May 1993 and began production in June 1994. The Akrep I is the original base model, while the Akrep II has a longer wheelbase, more weight and higher protection. The all-welded steel hull stops 7.62 mm ball ammunition and shell splinters, and higher STANAG levels apply to the Akrep II. Weight figures vary by source, about 3.6–4.5 t for the Akrep I and roughly 6–8 t for the Akrep II.
The crew is a driver and commander plus up to six troops, and armament ranges from a 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm machine gun to a remote weapon station or AGS-17 grenade launcher. Operators are the Turkish Land Forces, Gendarmerie and Police; exports are limited and no Arab operators are verified. Otokar showed the electric Akrep IIe at IDEX in 2021, as the first Turkish electric armoured vehicle. No price is public, but estimates are a few hundred thousand USD.
