What Is the Bavar-373? Overview, History and Development

Bavar-373 was unveiled by President Rouhani in August 2019 as an indigenous alternative to the Russian S-300 and S-400, after Russia cancelled the S-300 deal in 2010. It uses the Sayyad-4B missile, with active or semi-active radar homing, and the Meraj-4 3D phased-array radar. A battery typically has a command post, radar and several three-missile launchers. Iran claims it can engage several targets at once, up to 6.

Official Iranian claims give a range of 200 km, sometimes up to 300 km, an altitude of about 27 km and a speed of about Mach 6, none independently verified. Iran announced delivery to its Air Defence Force around 2023 and later increased numbers, but exact numbers are unknown. Reports after the June 2025 strikes suggested that Bavar-373 and other Iranian air defences were damaged, though details are not independently verified. Iran is the only operator and no exports are known. Comparison systems include the S-300PMU2 (also in Iranian service), S-400, Patriot and HQ-9.
