M113 APC
The M113 is an American tracked armoured personnel carrier designed by FMC Corporation and in US service since 1960. An aluminium-hulled vehicle built in about 80,000 units, it is probably the most widely used APC in history.
What Is the M113 APC? Overview, History and Development
The aluminium-hulled M113 replaced the M59 and M75 and entered US service in 1960. The original had a 209 hp Chrysler petrol engine, the M113A1 introduced a 212 hp Detroit 6V53 diesel, and the M113A3 added a RISE powerpack and armour. Weight is about 11.2 t, and it carries 2 crew plus 11 troops. It is amphibious with minor preparation, with 64 km/h on the road, 5.8 km/h in water and a range of 480 km.
About 80,000 were built, a commonly cited figure, in dozens of versions, including mortar carrier, ambulance and command variants, typically with a 12.7 mm M2 machine gun. In the Vietnam War the ACAV variant added armour shields. The US Army replaced it with the Bradley and later the AMPV. After 2022 Ukraine received hundreds from the US, Australia, with about 90 M113AS4, Denmark and others. Türkiye, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are among many operators. Rivals include the BMP-1 and Marder 1.
