What Is the BORA (Khan)? Overview, History and Development

Roketsan developed the BORA with input from TÜBİTAK SAGE, and it was first publicly tested in 2017. It is a quasi-ballistic, solid-fuel missile with inertial guidance and GPS support, about 6.3 m long and 2,000 kg in weight. Sources differ on figures, with the warhead cited at about 470 kg (some say 450 kg) and a terminal speed above Mach 5. Roketsan cites a range of about 280 km. It is launched from a truck-mounted launcher carrying two missiles.

Turkish media reported combat use against PKK targets in Iraq and Syria in 2019–2020, but this is unofficial. Indonesia reportedly signed for the Khan in 2022 in a deal valued at about 150 million dollars, with delivery status unclear. The Turkish Land Forces are the confirmed operator. Roketsan’s Tayfun is a longer-range ballistic missile of about 561 km, with higher ranges claimed. Rivals include the Iskander-M, China’s B611, ATACMS and South Korea’s Hyunmoo-2.
