Overview

Poland developed the PT-91, using the T-72M1 hull. The prototype appeared in 1992 and the tank entered Polish service in 1995. “Twardy” means hard or tough. It keeps the 125 mm 2A46MS smoothbore gun and autoloader with a crew of three, and adds Erawa-1 explosive reactive armour, an S-12U engine of about 850 hp, the SKO-1M Drawa-T fire-control system and Obra-3 laser warning., at about 46 t and roughly 3.5 million USD in the 1990s (hedged).

Poland bought about 232 new-build PT-91 Twardy tanks and later about 40 PT-91A, and is phasing them out as K2, Abrams and Leopard tanks arrive. Malaysia bought 48 PT-91M Pendekar tanks, contracted in 2003 and delivered in 2007–2009, the only export sale. India evaluated the tank in 1999–2001 but chose the T-90. Some Polish tanks went to Ukraine in 2022, with sources varying on whether they included PT-91 examples. The PT-91 is a stopgap until newer vehicles replace it.
