What Is the Oplot-M? Overview, History and Development

The Oplot-M is an upgrade of the BM Oplot and was adopted around 2009, but cost and funding problems limited deliveries to about 10 to 20. Armament is a 125 mm KBM-1 smoothbore gun, a coaxial 7.62 mm and a 12.7 mm remote station. Protection comes from Nozh-2 reactive and composite armour, with Varta soft-kill and hard-kill options. A 6TD-2E two-stroke diesel of 1,200 hp gives about 70 km/h at about 51 t, and the crew is 3.

Thailand ordered 49 Oplot-T tanks in a 2011 contract, with deliveries from 2014 to 2018 after delays, and the Thai Army uses them in two battalions. Pakistan’s T-80UD tanks are related, but Ukraine failed to export Oplot there in larger numbers. In the 2022 war Ukraine used a few Oplot tanks, and the BM Oplot-M appeared in combat footage. Rivals include the T-90MS, Leopard 2A4 and K1A1.
